Job Description

Are you a participant of Formula Student (Formula SAE) who wants to understand exactly how real-world vehicle physics translates into a cutting-edge virtual simulator?

This one-semester internship is designed as a hybrid of hands-on vehicle development and technical storytelling. You will learn the full BeamNG vehicle creation pipeline by helping build a Formula Student race car model and tuning it for core dynamic disciplines such as skidpad, acceleration, autocross, and endurance.

Just as importantly, you will document the process. Your notes, guides, and tutorials will help create a reference project for Formula Student teams who want to use BeamNG for virtual testing, setup evaluation, and early-stage vehicle development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop the physics model of a Formula Student race car in BeamNG using JBeam
  • Create or adapt the vehicle’s 3D mesh for visual representation
  • Select and integrate chassis, suspension, wheel, and powertrain configurations
  • Implement simulation scenarios for core Formula Student dynamic events
  • Develop documentation and tutorials to support future Formula Student teams in using BeamNG for virtual vehicle testing

Requirements

  • Education: Currently pursuing a degree in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • The SAE Spirit: Active or past involvement in a Formula Student team ideally in chassis and suspension design or vehicle dynamics simulation. Familiar with Formula Student rulebook and design constraints
  • Curiosity Over Expertise: You don’t need to be a coding wizard yet, but you must be eager to learn text-based physics configuration (Jbeam) and basic scripting.
  • Strong Communication: You enjoy explaining how things work. You can take a complex engineering problem you just solved and write it down clearly for others to learn from.
  • Software knowledge: Familiarity with BeamNG, VSCode, Blender, GIT/SVN is an advantage but not mandatory

Benefits

  • Flexible working hours
  • Language courses
  • Talent development program (training budget, participation in seminars/conferences, and etc)
  • Personal development program (feedback, leadership, conflict engagement, etc)
  • Parental leave
  • Employee assistance program
  • Relocation assistance (if applicable)

BeamNG GmbH

About BeamNG GmbH

BeamNG GmbH is focused on the continuing development of its state-of-the-art soft-body physics engine capable of real-time simulation of vehicle dynamics and damage on consumer hardware. Our engine was first released in 2013 and is now widely available for entertainment and professional industrial simulation purposes. Used in our best known product, our vehicle game BeamNG.drive, the BeamNG physics engine also has a track record of successfully being integrated into several academic and commercial research and design programs. We also provide a free version of BeamNG.tech for non-commercial research use. This has been central to several academic research studies leading to published papers.

We continue to push the envelope of what is possible in the simulation space while regularly releasing updates for BeamNG.drive. Our technology is adaptable and versatile so it can be applied to a variety of use-cases, as evidenced by our industrial co-operations where it has been used in driver behavior research, vehicle interior simulation, autonomous vehicle training and other machine learning initiatives. Our long-term goals include expanding the scope of our commercial co-operations with international partners while also continuing to support our game BeamNG.drive as it comes out of Early Access.

BeamNG GmbH's workforce is diverse and international. Our team works either from our office in Bremen, Germany or remotely from locations ranging from west-coast Canada to the gold coast of Australia. We place great value on fostering a sense of community among our workforce. Be it at industry conferences, training opportunities or just spending a couple of weeks working from our office in Bremen, we believe that a productive remote team stems from the positive relationships forged in having met face-to-face.
