Job Description
Official Title: Automation Engineer Lead Analyst
Business / Functional Title: Automation Engineer
Department: Infrastructure Operations
Location: Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur
Role Purpose / Summary
The Automation Engineer is a hands-on delivery role within Infrastructure Operations, responsible for developing, testing, documenting and maintaining automation solutions across infrastructure and operational services. The role exists to reduce manual effort, improve the reliability and consistency of operational services, and release capacity back to the wider infrastructure teams. It does this by turning operational pain points and intake requests into robust, reusable automation built on standard enterprise platforms.
The Automation Engineer works alongside the Automation Engineering Lead, taking ownership of an agreed share of the automation backlog and delivering it end-to-end, with priorities, standards and technical direction set by the Lead. The role is expected to be an early adopter of modern engineering practices and enterprise AI capabilities, using them appropriately to accelerate high-quality delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, document and maintain reusable automation for infrastructure and operational services, including provisioning, configuration, patching, housekeeping and reporting.
- Build and operate Ansible content through Ansible Automation Platform, including playbooks, roles, collections, job templates, inventories, credentials and schedules.
- Own assigned requests from intake through delivery and stable operation: clarify requirements, estimate work, build and validate the solution, document it, hand it over and resolve production issues during business hours.
- Develop modular automation using Python, PowerShell, Bash and YAML, following consistent coding and secure engineering standards.
- Manage code in Git using branching, pull requests and peer review, and deliver changes through approved CI/CD pipelines.
- Build testing and validation into delivery, including linting, idempotency checks and non-production dry runs, to support safe and repeatable releases.
- Develop and improve logging, monitoring and reporting across automations to improve understanding and outcomes and utilising enterprise syslog solutions.
- Work independently on assigned solutions, making day-to-day design and implementation decisions within agreed standards and guardrails.
- Work within enterprise technology standards and architectural direction, escalating proposed changes to tooling or design patterns, material service, cost or risk impacts, delivery blockers and conflicting priorities to the Automation Engineering Lead.
- Use approved AI-assisted development tools appropriately to improve delivery speed and quality, with proper review and testing of generated output.
- Champion AI assisted automation and tools across the technology and business sectors of the organisation through successful delivery of solutions and direct engagement with teams.
- Manage and develop automation platforms and solutions, providing reliable and performant solutions, ensuring high user satisfaction and dependable tooling for teams.
- Work with a variety of teams across the organisation to identify opportunities and feed them into the managed backlog.
Key Working Relationships
Works closely and collaboratively with:
- Automation Engineering Lead – priorities, standards, design review and backlog allocation.
- Infrastructure Operations and the wider Technology Engineering and Operations organisation – operational needs, automation opportunities and supportability.
- Project, programme and service management stakeholders – scope, priorities and delivery governance.
- Architecture, security and other enabling functions – technology alignment, design principles and risk or compliance requirements.
Skills, Experience & Requirements

- Hands-on experience managing Ansible Automation Platform or AWX.
- Practical experience with Git-based development, peer review, CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.
- Ability to translate operational requirements into technical solutions and deliver them with limited supervision.
- Strong written and spoken English, including clear technical and customer-facing documentation and confident engagement with global stakeholders.
- Self-motivated, proactive and collaborative, with a practical technical mindset and a focus on continuous improvement.
Desirable
- Infrastructure as code with Terraform or Packer, including image builds and standardised provisioning.
- Containers and orchestration using Docker or Podman, and Kubernetes or OpenShift.
- Working knowledge of Windows and Linux administration, with broad familiarity across virtualisation, storage, backup and recovery, and database platforms.

- Relevant industry certifications in infrastructure, automation and/or cloud technologies.

Working Arrangements
- Based in Kuala Lumpur, working a mix of office and home-based days in line with local policy (2 days in office, 3 days work from home)
