Automation Engineer

Summary

The Automation Engineer will design, develop, install, and commission automated electromechanical systems, including new equipment and automation improvements to existing equipment across the Composite Production Systems business. This role is important to Mattr’s operational advancement because it identifies high-impact automation opportunities and establishes effective approaches for implementing them safely and efficiently.

Reporting to the Manager, Manufacturing Technology and Automation Group, the Automation Engineer will collaborate with internal teams and external integrators to achieve project objectives. Success will require engineering leadership in safety and safety-focused design, disciplined engineering and documentation practices, and leadership in the Management of Change process. The role will also provide strategic support for automation project selection and management.

Responsibilities:

Deliver Safe and Compliant Automation Solutions

• Maintain a safe working environment by following corporate safety rules and regulations and contributing to a strong culture of safety.
• Ensure equipment and processes operate safely and efficiently.
• Support the development of machine hazard and risk assessments and standard operating procedures.
• Cooperate in protecting the health and safety of all workers at the work site and help ensure workers understand their health and safety responsibilities.

Lead Automation Engineering Activities

• Identify, propose, and select automation initiatives that align with the strategic transformation plan.
• Direct and supervise the design activities of team members and integrators, continually maintaining alignment with automation project objectives and strategic goals.
• Prepare and stamp automation system designs and specifications that comply with applicable codes and accepted engineering and safety standards.
• Provide leadership in designing for ergonomics, safety, and user experience.
• Supervise installation activities and ensure they comply with the project management process.
• Perform functional testing, debugging, and commissioning of automation systems.
• Prepare and lead project proposals, charters, cost estimates, and execution plans for capital projects.
• Support project status reporting and cost control while ensuring adherence to scope, cost, and schedule requirements.
• Complete required due diligence for automation projects.
• Lead functional safety design, testing, verification, documentation, and review activities.
• Review equipment specifications and purchasing requirements, develop cost estimates, and recommend modifications as required.
• Lead engineering risk assessments for projects and equipment.

Advance and Coordinate Strategic Projects

• Assess project feasibility and help establish project priorities.
• Identify new capital projects and locations where automation can deliver significant impact.
• Coordinate projects with project owners and support the effective management of project teams.

Drive Continuous Improvement

• Participate in Lean Enterprise and corporate optimization programs as required.
• Support, facilitate, and manage continuous improvement initiatives involving capital and process improvements.
• Advance Best in Class and Continuous Improvement practices by contributing to Value Stream Mapping, Root Cause Analysis, and machine-efficiency improvements.

Qualifications:

Education and Professional Credentials

• A three-year college diploma in Automation Engineering or a related technical discipline is required.
• A university degree is preferred.
• Certified Engineering Technologist designation, or an equivalent designation recognized in the applicable jurisdiction, is required.
• Professional Engineer designation in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, combined with automation and programming experience, is preferred.

Experience

• At least five years of experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment, performing automation design and commissioning activities.
• Experience designing and implementing industrial automation solutions.
• Experience automating manufacturing equipment.
• Demonstrated experience testing, verifying, debugging, and commissioning automation systems.

Technical Capabilities

• Broad knowledge of automation-system technologies, including:
• Strong process-analysis and problem-identification capabilities.
• Ability to prepare engineering designs, specifications, project documentation, cost estimates, and execution plans.
• Understanding of functional safety, equipment risk assessment, and safe equipment design.

Professional Skills

• Excellent planning and organizational skills.
• Strong independent work ethic and a process-oriented approach.
• Ability to build consensus while remaining focused on results.
• Strong collaboration skills for working with cross-functional teams, project owners, and external integrators.
• Fluency in spoken and written English.
• Ability to travel occasionally.

The Salary Range for this position is $94,000 to $118,000. The provided range represents the anticipated base salary and target incentive for this position. The final total compensation will be determined based on the successful candidate’s skills, experience, qualifications, and internal equity considerations.
