Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Automation / Controls Design Engineer to join our engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, programming, and implementing electrical control systems and PLC-based automation solutions for automated machinery and industrial equipment. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience with PLC design and programming, proficiency in AutoCAD 2D for electrical and control schematics, and strong expertise in Rockwell Automation technologies, including PLCs, HMIs, and industrial networking protocols. A solid background in electrical engineering and proven experience in a manufacturing environment are essential, with a focus on improving reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design & Development:
    • Design and develop electrical control systems and PLC-based automation solutions.
    • Create and update electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and bills of materials using AutoCAD 2D or AutoCAD.
  • Programming:
    • Program, test, and debug PLCs (Allen-Bradley) for new equipment and process improvements.
    • Develop and maintain HMI screens using FactoryTalk View.
  • Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with maintenance and production teams to integrate control systems with equipment .
    • Support installation and commissioning new control systems at internal sites.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, and control system issues.
    • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions .
  • Compliance:
    • Ensure designs comply with safety and industry standards (NEC/NFPA codes).
    • Maintain documentation and version control of software and schematics.
  • System Integration:
    • Configure Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and motion control systems.
    • Set up and maintain industrial networks using protocols like Ethernet/IP and DeviceNet.
  • Support:
    • Provide technical guidance and training to maintenance teams.
    • Support production operations across shifts as needed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of experience in controls engineering, including PLC design and programming.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD 2D or AutoCAD for creating electrical schematics and diagrams for control design.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial automation systems, sensors, HMIs, and control panels.
  • Experience with control panel layout and wiring design.

Eligibility Requirements

  • This role requires use of technical data subject to U.S. Government export restrictions and this posting is only for U.S. Persons (U.S. Citizens, lawful permanent residents and protected individuals (e.g., certain refugees and asylees)). GE will require proof of status prior to employment
  • This is a 100% onsite position.
  • This role will support the Parsippany, NJ site for majority of the time but will require travel to the Allentown, PA and Hungary for needed support. 25% travel domestic and international.
  • Flexibility to support production operations across shifts as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with HMI design and SCADA systems and industrial cybersecurity.
  • Expert in Rockwell Automation software (Studio 5000, RSLogix 5000, FactoryTalk View SE/ME
  • Extensive experience with ControlLogix, CompactLogix, PanelView, and VFDs.
  • Proficiency in ladder logic programming and working with high voltages.
  • Strong understanding of industrial protocols like Ethernet/IP and Profibus.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 70/79 or IEC standards.
  • Certified Automation Professional (CAP) or equivalent.
  • Prefer controls experience within the chemical industry.
  • Experience in a manufacturing or industrial automation environment.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities.

For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between $125,600.00 and $209,300.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas.
