Job Description

Our client is seeking a detail-oriented AutoCAD Electrical Designer to create accurate, production-ready electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts for industrial and municipal automation projects.

This position is ideal for an Electrical Designer, Controls Designer, AutoCAD Electrical Designer, Electrical Drafter, or Control Panel Designer with experience supporting PLC-based control systems, panel fabrication, and industrial automation projects. You will work closely with Controls Engineers, Project Managers, and fabrication teams to turn control strategies, specifications, and engineering redlines into clear, compliant, build-ready drawing packages.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, point-to-point drawings, and control panel layouts for industrial control panels.
  • Create and maintain AutoCAD Electrical project files, drawing sets, title blocks, wire numbers, device tags, and bill-of-material information.
  • Translate engineering redlines, control narratives, equipment specifications, and design intent into accurate electrical drawings.
  • Coordinate with Controls Engineers to clarify PLC I/O requirements, control logic, device selection, panel components, and system architecture.
  • Design drawings involving PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, motor controls, relays, terminal blocks, power supplies, circuit protection, instrumentation, and industrial communication equipment.
  • Apply internal design standards, customer specifications, NEC requirements, UL 508A practices, and other applicable electrical standards.
  • Support panel fabrication teams by producing clear, organized, build-ready drawings and responding to questions during assembly and wiring.
  • Incorporate design revisions, markups, redlines, field feedback, checkout findings, and testing updates throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Participate in drawing reviews, design backchecks, and quality-control processes to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Identify drawing conflicts, missing information, constructability issues, or potential design improvements and escalate them to Engineering.
  • Maintain organized project documentation, drawing revisions, file naming, and revision-control records.
  • Assist with updates needed for panel checkout, factory acceptance testing, commissioning, and field support.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree or technical certification in drafting, engineering technology, electrical design, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience creating or revising electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control drawings, or control panel layouts.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical is required.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, control specifications, and equipment documentation.
  • Understanding of industrial control components including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, relays, terminal blocks, power supplies, circuit breakers, fuses, sensors, and instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with low-voltage control circuits and basic industrial power distribution, including 24VDC, 120VAC, and 480VAC systems.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and commitment to drawing accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple design projects, priorities, revisions, and deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience designing industrial control panels for manufacturing, process automation, pumping systems, municipal utilities, water/wastewater, or similar environments.
  • Knowledge of UL 508A, NFPA 70 / NEC, and industrial electrical design standards.
  • Experience supporting panel fabrication, wiring, panel checkout, factory acceptance testing, or commissioning activities.
  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation platforms, including CompactLogix, ControlLogix, PanelView, and PowerFlex.
  • Understanding of PLC I/O architecture, remote I/O, control system design concepts, and industrial automation hardware.
  • Interest in growing into Senior Designer, Lead Designer, Controls Hardware Engineer, or related technical leadership roles.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying design improvements.

Work Environment

This is primarily an office-based electrical design role in the Kansas City area. Regular collaboration with Controls Engineers, project managers, fabrication personnel, and field service teams is expected.
