Authored Works Review (Editor)

Position Description:

Network Runners, Inc. is seeking a full-time Authored Works Review (Editor) to support the Defense Health Agency (DHA) and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) Hospital Communications Department. The Editor will safeguard the command’s voice, credibility, accuracy, and consistency by managing the review, editing, fact-checking, coordination, and final clearance of written materials intended for public release.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the end-to-end editorial lifecycle for public-facing written materials, including articles, reports, web content, leadership messaging, and other command communications.
  • Develop and maintain an editorial calendar and track documents through multiple stages of review, coordination, revision, and approval to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Perform detailed editing, copyediting, and proofreading for clarity, accuracy, grammar, punctuation, consistency, and compliance with Associated Press (AP) Style, command style guides, and applicable Department of War requirements.
  • Conduct rigorous fact-checking and source verification for claims, statistics, medical information, and other substantive content prior to release.
  • Coordinate with authors, subject matter experts, legal counsel, Public Affairs leadership, and other stakeholders to resolve comments, verify information, and obtain required concurrence and approval.
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce organizational style guidance to promote a consistent and professional voice across written communications.
  • Manage the final clearance process and package finalized documents for review and approval before public release.
  • Ensure written products appropriately safeguard HIPAA and Protected Health Information (PHI) and comply with applicable privacy and information-protection requirements.

Minimum Education / Experience / Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or a related field.
  • Five (5) or more years of demonstrable experience in professional editing, copyediting, or technical writing.
  • Exceptional command of English grammar, punctuation, and Associated Press (AP) Style.
  • Proven experience in healthcare communications, military public affairs, or a similar regulated, high-visibility environment.
  • Thorough understanding of and ability to rigorously safeguard HIPAA and Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Project management experience managing editorial calendars, multi-author publications, competing deadlines, and complex review processes.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a strong ethical commitment to accuracy, fact-checking, and source verification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the required Tier II non-critical sensitive background investigation and Common Access Card (CAC) for access to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and DHA systems.
  • Ability to complete required Department of War/Defense Health Agency onboarding, security, privacy, HIPAA, and other mandatory training and to execute the required DHA non-disclosure agreement prior to beginning work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct experience reviewing medical research, public policy, military doctrine, or similarly technical and sensitive subject matter.

Work Location: Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), 8901 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, Maryland 20889. Work is performed on-site Monday through Friday, excluding Federal holidays and Government-directed closures. Occasional support outside normal duty hours may be required for contingency plan activations or exercises.
