Function / Position Summary

Supports, plans, organizes and performs technical, inventory and production support for the Auditorium and other performing arts/event spaces in and around the district buildings. Assists in the safe operation and maintenance of theater/performance event areas of the buildings, sound, lighting, rigging and related equipment and systems used in support of stage/event productions, meetings, rentals and related events. Responsible for and assists with the supply inventory, organization of equipment, ordering of equipment and reporting of maintenance needs of related areas. In addition, consultation when appropriate to support the audio and visual needs of the district's performance areas such as auditoriums, cafetoriums and/or performance spaces performs related duties as required that are not overseen by the IS department.

Job Duties / Responsibilities

Scheduling/Tech Support:

  • Work with administration on maintaining an accurate master calendar of all events in the performance area and serve as a resource for staff/administrations in planning events.
  • Report individual work schedules to immediate supervisor for review and approval.
  • Assist the Facility Rental program within Plant Operations with the event scheduling for all practices and production schedules of the building(s).
  • Consult and/or support feeder pattern Middle and Elementary school performances related to technical items, if needed, within their buildings or at the high schools when elementary/ middle schools are using the facility.
  • Coordinate the use of needed technical and facility items, if needed, however the priority being the high school productions to minimize facility conflicts.
  • Oversee use of auditorium space and equipment by students, staff and during rentals.

Facilities/Maintenance/Organization/Safety

  • Consult and assist with the maintenance and responsibility for the organization and functionality of all audio/video equipment that would be used in the various performance spaces to support the school (this includes but is not limited to the gymnasiums, black box, and lecture rooms, commons sound systems and stadiums). This does not include the equipment that is purchased and maintained by the IS department.
  • Order, inventory and report safety theater/production related items. Make recommendations for purchasing of auditorium/event area's lighting and sound equipment in addition to expendable supplies.
  • Maintain safety, clean and efficiency of all auditorium technical facilities; stage rigging, construction/storage areas, equipment storage areas, prop storage areas, lighting and sound equipment.
  • Initiate requests and submit orders for supplies, materials, parts and tools following District purchasing procedures including obtaining quotes as needed from approved vendors.
  • Collaborate with the assigned architectural and engineering teams within the Plant Operations department to gain compliance and safety approvals when appropriate in stage set design and construction.
  • Maintain proper safety protocols when working with all production lighting, stage rails, counter weight systems, production set building/strike by utilizing Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) including but not limited to safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, steel toe shoes, etc.
  • Inspect rigging systems for any issues related to proper operation and safety. Report issues to Plant Operations.
  • Plan and/or oversee all scenic movement during rehearsals in collaboration with the production director to ensure safety protocols are being followed.

Productions/Events/Supervision

  • Collaborate with the *production director(s), consult and communicate about the design and construction of the scenery, design lighting and sound, installation of such for stage/event spaces; consult and/or coordinate the technical demands of all productions, performances and events for the facility being used. *Establishing the production designers is the responsibility of the production director; however it does not default to the Auditorium Lead. Determination of the production designers must be established when the selections of the performance dates are finalized. This early determination enables the ability to seek external designers if warranted.
  • Attend production meetings for plays, musicals and productions, as well as other auditorium/facility based performances (variety shows, music concerts, one acts, etc.) when applicable to be able to navigate potential technical/facility conflicts or safety concerns.
  • Set up and teardown (strike) equipment for all functions. Assist with the coordination of post-production strike and clean-up of all facilities, materials and equipment.
  • Coordinate the use of portable sound systems (rented or other) when needed for outside use, including athletic, community service, band/summer camps, and other district approved events.
  • Provide assistance with Board of Education (BOE) meetings supporting the webcast and audio equipment and be available to be cross-trained to participate in this rotation to support BOE meetings.
  • Assist with the coordination, training and supervision of student technical crews to build and maintain an ongoing student technical production team to meet the demands of the technical theater production needs.

Budget/Trainings/Professional Development

  • Collaborate with the Plant Operations Administration in the development and adherence to a budget provided by Plant Operations.
  • Collaborate with the Production/Event Director(s) to maintain adherence to the budget approved for the production/event.
  • Participate in required safety and/or certification training as mandated by the Plant Operations department.
  • Attend pre-approved professional development seminars/workshops related to the position.
  • Other duties as assigned by administration related to the goals of this position.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in related fields preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience working as a stage technician in a well-equipped venue preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Related safety training/certifications preferred.
  • Experience in facility management, providing technical support and maintenance of auditorium/performance facilities and visual & performing arts areas.

Experience / Knowledge

  • Knowledge of stage technology including but not limited to: Lighting Design and execution using electronic lighting systems, Sound Design/Mixing using digital and interfacing analog systems.
  • Knowledge of auditorium/production equipment including but not limited to: stage rigging systems, Stage pit systems, Acoustic band, choral and orchestra stage acoustic walls/ equipment, performance floor maintenance and special effects equipment.
  • Experience and knowledge of incorporating and maintaining all safety code protocols/procedures related to theater/performance presentations and all related production equipment.
  • Knowledge of video broadcasting systems and editing equipment.
  • Knowledge of different computer operating systems such as Windows 8 &10, Mac OS X, and Google Chrome OS.
  • Knowledge of various computer applications that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office applications, Google web-based applications, and different social media applications.
  • Possess a valid Driver's License, and have the ability to travel throughout the District in support of the department operations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a productive relationship with building maintenance and Plant Operations staff in support of the auditorium and event area systems including repair and replacement of the same.

Terms of Employment

  • This 12-month position.
  • Salary and benefits are as established by the agreement between ESSO and the Board of Education.
  • Additional compensated pre-approved hours during the work year to accommodate production and event calendars. Flexibility in work days/hours is required.
  • The starting rate for this role is $28.46/hr.
