The Legal Department of the Secretary of State is seeking an Attorney 4. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in litigation, exceptional legal research and writing skills, and familiarity with standard legal research platforms and case management systems.

Examples of duties

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice law plus three years of experience as a practicing attorney.

Job Duties:
As an Attorney, you will be instrumental in the following:

  • Litigates routine cases in trial and appellate courts and before administrative tribunals under the supervision of a higher-ranking attorney.
  • Assists an attorney of higher rank in preparing major or complex cases for trial by drafting pleadings, interviewing witnesses, writing legal memoranda, and briefs.
  • Enters claims for collecting monies due the state.
  • Assists in preparing proposed legislation.
  • Drafts tentative rules and regulations and reviews rules, regulations, and bulletins prepared by administrative officers for conformity to the law.
  • Investigate reports of violations of statutes and administrative rules and regulations.
  • Prepares advisory opinions for review by a higher-ranking attorney.
  • Prepares or reviews legal documents, including contracts, licenses, deeds, and abstracts.
  • Research laws applicable to the above activities.
  • To conduct hearings and to render decisions.

Preferred Skills:

  • Litigation Experience – trial and courtroom experience, preferably including civil matters.

  • Strong Legal Research & Writing Skills – demonstrated ability to draft pleadings, motions, appellate briefs, and legal opinions.

  • Technology experience – familiarity with legal research platforms (Westlaw) and case management systems.
