The State Board of Education is made up of 19 members — 11 who are elected and eight who are appointed by the governor. The chairs of the education committees of the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate serve as non‑voting ex officio members. The Superintendent of Public Instruction serves as secretary of the State Board of Education.
The Office for Professional Conduct administers the ethical standards for educators. The office investigates allegations involving criminal or ethical violations to ensure that all Ohio students receive instruction from educators committed to maintaining a safe, supportive, and healthy school community.
Attorney 3 is a key role at the Board. In this position, you will be responsible for:
Serving as lead staff attorney to draft and review disciplinary documents in accordance with statutory provisions.
Assisting office staff and assistant attorney generals in preparing cases for administrative hearings.
Providing work directions and training to office staff regarding applicable statutory provisions and other pertinent laws.
Acting for the administrator of the Office of Professional Conduct (OPC) to independently administer the teacher disciplinary process used to evaluate cases involving professional misconduct of teachers.
Conducting investigations on cases involving professional misconduct of teachers with an emphasis on cases not involving criminal convictions.
Reviewing causes of potential disciplinary action with OPC administrator and making disciplinary recommendations.
Negotiating the settlement of misconduct cases within guidelines established by the administrator and State Board of Education.
Preparing resolutions for State Board of Education approval.
Monitoring and tracking cases on appeal, including preparing and certifying administrative hearing records to courts.
Serving as liaison to hearing officers, including monitoring hearing officer reports and recommending and coordinating periodic training.
Conducting legal research and writing reports.
Assisting with planning, developing and implementing internal guidelines and procedures as provided by ORC and other pertinent laws.
Serving as department liaison to other agencies (e.g., Attorney General’s Office, statewide prosecutor offices, Children Services Agencies).

Admission to Ohio Bar pursuant to Section 4705.01 of Revised Code AND 6 months of experience as a licensed attorney.
