TITLE: Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach

DEPARTMENT: Athletics

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Permanent Full-Time

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: Reports to Head Basketball Coach

JOB PURPOSE:

Assist the Head Coach with the administration and operation of all aspects of a competitive Division I basketball program. Responsibilities include assisting with practice and competition coaching, recruitment and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes, participation in College fundraising activities, enrollment management, and promoting community relations. Additional duties may be assigned by the Director of Athletics.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions:

Coaching:

  • Communicate effectively with department colleagues and student-athletes.
  • Assist with the organization and administration of all aspects of the program.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of a competitive athletic program within the conference.
  • Create a safe and positive environment for student-athletes to succeed.
  • Promote Wagner Student-Athlete Ethics and Expectations.
  • Demonstrate good sportsmanship and maintain professional conduct.

Recruitment and Retention of Student-Athletes:

  • Recruit, evaluate, and retain academically and athletically qualified student-athletes.
  • Support student-athletes in achieving academic success.
  • Adhere to NCAA, Northeast Conference, institutional, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Pass the annual NCAA Coaches Certification Test.
  • Maintain all required documentation related to institutional and NCAA compliance standards.

Administration:

  • Support the Head Coach with coordinating competitive schedules and ensuring NCAA sponsorship requirements are met.
  • Assist with team practices and operations.
  • Communicate effectively with the Head Coach, sport administrator, facilities personnel, medical staff, sports information office, and academic services.
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility in managing budget-related matters.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation for expenditures and NCAA compliance requirements.
  • Assist with team travel arrangements and procurement of equipment needs.
  • Maintain on-campus office hours.

Public Relations:

  • Promote a positive image of Wagner College at all times.
  • Support team life skills initiatives and community outreach projects.
  • Support the Sports Information Office with publicity-related information.
  • Assist with marketing initiatives, appearances, and promotional activities.

Fundraising:

  • Support fundraising efforts for the Seahawk Club and Wagner College.

Non-Essential Functions:

Additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Work Experience:

1–2 years of related experience preferred.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

Certifications/Licenses:

None required.

Computer Skills:

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other applicable recruiting and athletics software systems preferred.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

Position may require evening, weekend, and holiday work as determined by team schedules, competitions, recruiting activities, and departmental needs.
