The Athletic Field Maintenance Specialist trains and leads staff in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public recreation and park facilities, including athletic fields, tennis courts, irrigation systems, outdoor basketball courts, tracks, and other recreational facilities. This is a hands-on opportunity to support the community by ensuring Hampton’s recreational spaces remain well-maintained, safe, and welcoming for residents and visitors.

The purpose of the class is to train staff engaged in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public recreation and parks facilities, such as tennis courts, athletic fields, irrigation systems, outdoor basketball courts, outdoor tracks and other physical facilities.
Minimum Requirements:
Graduation from high school or GED required.
Minimum of (3) three year’s work experience in the repair and maintenance of recreation facilities, athletic fields and irrigation systems.
Graduation from an accredited college in the field of agronomy, arboricultural, agriculture, horticulture, parks facilities and landscape design preferred or combination of education, skills, knowledge and experience.
Any acceptable combination of experience and education which qualifies the applicant for this particular position may be considered for the more specific requirements outlined above.
Additional Requirements:
Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
Applicants will be required to obtain a Registered Technician Pesticide License within six (6) months of employment.
Must possess a Virginia Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) within 90 days of employment to possess and maintain a Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 180 days.
