Job Description
The Athletic Academic Support Coordinator is responsible for assisting athletic students with degree completion by outlining appropriate educational plans, clarifying academic and long-term goals, improving decision-making skills, evaluating degree progression, and discovering additional resources designed to enhance their collegiate experience. The Athletic Academic Support Coordinator will assist athletic students' transition through their educational and athletic potential for success, while ensuring the University goals of improving academic success and retention rates. (This position is funded by an NCAA Division II Strategic Alliance grant focused on increasing ethnic minority and gender representation in intercollegiate athletic administrative positions).
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Will be responsible to lead and manage all aspects of an academic and student-athlete support system.
- Work closely with coaches from Ohio Dominican University's 16 varsity athletic programs in devising strategies to improve academic support systems. The coordinator will help select and train study tables monitors. This position will have oversight of each program's academic plan and work to ensure that there is a smooth, cohesive strategy between Athletics and other departments on campus.
- Serve as the main liaison from the Athletic Department with Academic Advising and Student Success, the Academic Resource Center, Career Development, and other departments as needed. Will also work closely with the registrar and the Executive Director of Student Success in tracking the academic progress of student-athletes and ensuring progress toward graduation.
- Create academic plans for at-risk students that outline degree completion requirements.
- Monitor student-athlete progress toward degree completion and continuing education.
- Work with various offices across campus to strengthen the program to assist student athletes in making the transition from high school to college.
- -Present to and meet with prospective students and their guests during admission recruitment events
- Communicate with faculty regarding student-athlete progress issues and missed class time issues and assist with faculty advisor training.
- Work closely with the NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative to ensure that lines of communication between faculty and the Athletic Department are open and well established.
- Formulate academic success plans for student-athletes experiencing academic difficulty.
- In conjunction Academic Success and the Career Development Department, the Coordinator will provide oversight for programming designed to prepare student-athletes for life after graduation (designing workshops, bringing speakers to campus, etc.). This will require the ability to manage budgeted dollars and prioritize events and finances.
- In conjunction with the Financial Aid office, this position will meet with student-athletes and advise them on scholarship opportunities and other post-graduate opportunities.
- Work directly with the Associate Athletic Director/Director of Compliance to develop academic recovery plans for ineligible student-athletes. - Serve on various campus committees and represent the Athletic Department at various campus functions and events.
- Attend selected NCAA and regional/national meetings and workshops.
- Consult regularly with the Athletic Director and Associate Athletic Director to formulate plans and strategies to construct academic policies for the Athletic Department.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree required or higher, Master's degree preferred in Higher Education, a minimum of three to five years' work experience in academic advising or comparable experience.
- Must possess strong interpersonal, organizational, team-building skills, writing, and presentation skills, and must be detail-oriented.
- Must demonstrate a commitment to helping students achieve success with a high level of professionalism and integrity.
- Proficiency with MS word processing, Excel spreadsheets and the ability to utilize computerized registration systems (Datatel and Colleague) and degree audit interpretation are also required for this position.
- Demonstrate leadership, tact, diplomacy, professionalism and a positive demeanor in performance of all duties.
