The Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Sciences (DOVS) in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto invites applications for the William Dixon Early Career Professorship in Cornea Discovery Science. Established as a tribute to Dr. William Dixon, the Professorship is intended to support an outstanding early-career faculty member whose academic work contributes to advances in cornea research and discovery science. The appointment is for a five-year term and the anticipated start date is November 1, 2027, but negotiable.

Candidates must hold an MD, PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree and hold or be eligible for appointment in the Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. Applicants should have a record of achievement and demonstrated promise in ophthalmology and vision sciences, with a particular focus on cornea discovery science.

The successful candidate will have an established academic program and evidence of contributions to research, education, clinical scholarship, knowledge translation, and/or related scholarly activities. Candidates should demonstrate excellence appropriate to their career stage through scholarly publications, success in obtaining research funding, presentations at scientific meetings, trainee supervision, educational contributions, awards, and other academic accomplishments.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the academic mission and priorities of the Department through research, teaching, mentorship, collaboration, and service. KEY EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Maintain and further develop a strong academic program in cornea discovery science;
  • Advance research and scholarly activity that contributes to the understanding, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of corneal disease;
  • Enhance the Department's research profile through publications, presentations, and collaborative initiatives;
  • Support the training and mentorship of students, residents, fellows, and early-career investigators;
  • Contribute to the educational activities of the Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Sciences;
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaborations within the University of Toronto and its affiliated hospitals and research institutes;
  • Participate in Departmental, Faculty, and University service activities; and
  • Provide reports and updates regarding activities supported by the Professorship, as required.

The William Dixon Early Career Professorship in Cornea Discovery Science carries an annual stipend of $75,000 CAD per annum. The appointment will be for a 5-year term. The stipend and any other funds associated with the Professorship will be administered through the Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Sciences in accordance with University of Toronto requirements and the terms of the fund.
