About the role:

MUFG is seeking an Associate or Vice President, Financial Institutions Credit Management to join their Sydney or Melbourne based team, playing a pivotal role in the ongoing growth and success of the FI business across Australia and New Zealand.

This opportunity offers you the chance to be at the heart of a sector that now accounts for over 20% of MUFG’s Oceania portfolio, supporting strategic origination and execution of Fund Finance, Securitisation, and Diversified NBFI and Bank transactions. You will be instrumental in maintaining high-quality portfolio management, leading complex refinancing activities, and collaborating with coverage teams to ensure robust credit analysis and monitoring.

What you'll do:

You will be responsible for overseeing a diverse portfolio of FI clients across Australia and New Zealand. Your day-to-day activities will involve rigorous monitoring of borrower performance post origination to ensure accurate assessment of financial health. You will lead refinancing efforts on complex deals while collaborating closely with coverage teams to deliver insightful credit analysis that supports both new origination and existing client transactions.

  • Maintain high quality portfolio management of Financial Institution clients by consistently monitoring borrower performance, outlook, and credit profiles to identify emerging risks and opportunities.
  • Lead refinancing activities and complex transaction execution alongside the Coverage team, ensuring optimal risk-return outcomes for MUFG.
  • Support FI portfolio construction by providing insights into revenue generation, profit optimisation, balance sheet management, and loss limitation as part of local, regional, and global growth plans.
  • Collaborate constructively with internal stakeholders including FI regional management teams, product teams (AIBD-FF, AIBD-SEC), FICO, SFCO, MGS, and Coverage Team Members to share sector insights and drive business growth.
  • Coach junior team members through guidance, mentorship, participation in training sessions, and leading team meetings to foster communal knowledge sharing.
  • Conduct independent research and analysis on customers and markets to inform credit decisions using critical thinking and attention to detail.
  • Ensure quality submissions are maintained at a high standard by working closely with MGS and other relevant teams.
  • Identify emerging risks within the portfolio promptly and manage concerns by seeking advice or action from in-country FI Coverage or other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate adaptability by prioritising multiple tasks across various work streams while maintaining accuracy in credit writing, financial analysis, modelling, legal documentation, and debt structuring.
  • Contribute positively to teamwork by developing strong relationships across local and regional staff members with a proactive approach.

What you bring:

To excel as you will bring extensive experience in institutional lending within the FI sector. Your technical expertise will enable you to navigate complex fund finance structures while applying advanced mathematical skills during financial analysis. You should possess comprehensive knowledge of market dynamics affecting financial institutions coupled with the ability to conduct independent research that informs strategic decisions.

  • Associate – Minimum 4 years’ experience in a major domestic or international bank or chartered accounting firm. Candidates from credit rating agencies, investment banks or investment management firms which have relevant skills will also be considered
  • Vice President - Minimum 7 years’ experience in institutional lending, ideally this will include a period of direct Financial Institutions sector experience.
  • During this time you will have developed a deep technical background including proven ability to produce high-standard credit writing, undertake detailed financial analysis/modelling, handle legal documentation, and structure debt effectively.
  • Business/Commerce/Law degree from a leading university is mandatory
    • Masters of Finance/MBA/CFA qualifications are considered favourably.
  • Comprehensive understanding of financial markets and economic environments relevant to FI sector operations.
  • Strong mathematical knowledge paired with advanced financial analysis acumen.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite especially Excel is essential.
  • Capacity for independent research combined with critical thinking skills; meticulous attention to detail when analysing customers or markets.
  • Clear communication skills both written and verbal; able to present findings confidently to internal stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities; proven track record as a dependable team player who collaborates well across regions.
  • Self-starter mentality demonstrating initiative along with enthusiasm for continuous learning; curiosity about emerging industry themes is valued.
  • Analytical mindset with problem solving capabilities; adept at prioritising tasks across multiple work streams while engaging numerous stakeholders simultaneously.
