Job Description

Holistic Veterinary Care

Founded by Dr. Gary Richter, a nationally recognized leader in integrative veterinary medicine, Forbes Veterinary Advisor, and author of The Ultimate Pet Health Guide, Holistic Veterinary Care has spent years building something genuinely rare. We're the only clinic in Oakland with a dedicated rehabilitation center for pets, and the only practice in the Bay Area equipped with a hyperbaric oxygen chamber.

Now part of the VetnCare community, we're backed by a growing network of hospitals that share our commitment to advanced, high-quality care, while fully preserving the culture and clinical identity that makes this place what it is.

This isn't your typical general practice position. As our Rehab Veterinarian, you'll work alongside a multidisciplinary team and you'll lead rehabilitation consultations, deliver hands-on physical therapy, and contribute to a caseload that spans integrative medicine, regenerative treatments, and emerging therapies most practices simply don't offer.

New rehabilitation consultations are scheduled for 60 minutes, giving you the time to do the work right. The pace here is intentional, closer to a specialty referral environment than a high-volume GP, so you can focus on quality care without the chaos. You'll also see general practice cases including wellness visits, diagnostics, bloodwork, radiography, dentistry, and sedated procedures, so your skills stay broad even as your specialty deepens

The Role: Associate Veterinarian

This is more than just an associate veterinarian position — it's an invitation to grow into an integrative practitioner alongside a nationally recognized leader in the field, with access to therapies and mentorship you won't find anywhere else in the Bay Area.

You Will:

  • Conduct comprehensive medical exams, diagnose and manage a wide range of conditions, and build individualized treatment plans
  • Perform wellness visits, diagnostics, bloodwork, digital radiography, dentistry, and sedated procedures — keeping your general practice skills sharp and broad
  • Work alongside Dr. Gary Richter and a multidisciplinary team to explore integrative approaches — acupuncture, herbal therapy, physical rehabilitation, or another modality that speaks to your interests
  • Provide clients with treatment options and outcomes that go beyond what conventional Western care alone can offer
  • Deliver clear, compassionate client communication and education
  • Grow your skill set over time with direct mentorship — no certification required on day one, just genuine curiosity and a willingness to learn

About Our Hospital
Modalities & Services Available On-Site:

  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and ozone therapy
  • Stem cell therapy, joint injections (PRP and osteocushion products)
  • Underwater treadmill therapy
  • Shockwave and cold laser therapy
  • Acupuncture and chiropractic care
  • Physical rehabilitation programs
  • Digital radiography and full in-house diagnostics

Our Team:
You'll work alongside Dr. Gary Richter, a rehab-focused veterinarian, a part-time human physical therapist certified in veterinary rehabilitation, a part-time acupuncturist, and a part-time chiropractor — several with backgrounds in human healthcare and specialized veterinary training. Hiring here is shaped as much by cultural fit as clinical skill: we're a collaborative, low-drama, patient-first group, and that matters.

What You Bring:

  • A solid foundation as a general practitioner (roughly 1+ year internship, or ~2 years post-graduate experience preferred)
  • Genuine interest in integrative and holistic medicine — you don't need existing certification or experience, just curiosity and openness to learning
  • Strong client communication skills and a high-touch, education-forward approach to care
  • Confidence in your clinical decision-making, with a collaborative, team-first mindset
  • Bonus if you have: acupuncture, herbal medicine, or physical rehabilitation interest or experience

Our Culture & Values
Our clients come to us because they're looking for more than a standard visit — and our team shows up every day to meet that. We believe in thoughtful, unhurried care, open communication, and genuinely investing in our people. Dr. Richter is personally invested in mentoring the right candidate — if you're someone who wants to grow past the edges of conventional veterinary medicine, with a team as committed to your development as they are to their patients, we'd love to connect.

Schedule
Tuesday – Friday: 10:00am – 6:00pm
Saturday: 8:00am – 4:00pm
Sunday – Monday: Closed
Full-time, 5 days/week preferred (4x10 schedules open to discussion for the right person).

What We Offer

  • $160,000 - $170,000 base salary, + uncapped production bonus for unlimited earning potential with no negative accruals
  • Sign-on bonuses and relocation support available for qualified candidates based on experience and location
  • $2,000 annual CE allowance + 40 hours paid time to invest in your professional growth (based on four day work week)
  • 401(k) with 100% company match up to 4%
  • Generous discounts on care for multiple pets
  • Advanced clinical training across our hospital network with DVMs who specialize in cases typically referred out, allowing you to elevate your skillset beyond what most practices can offer.
  • Comprehensive medical (virtual care included), dental, and vision insurance to support your health while you care for theirs
  • Health and Dependent Care FSA/HSA accounts to maximize your tax savings and healthcare flexibility
  • Employer-paid life and AD&D insurance to protect what matters most
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage to protect your income if life throws you a curveball.
  • Comprehensive Employee Assistance Program providing free mental health counseling, legal and financial consultations, and family support services available 24/7 for you and your loved ones
  • Paid time off, sick leave, and paid holidays to support your work-life balance
  • 2 complimentary scrub sets annually + 50% discount on additional uniforms
  • Consistent growth opportunities to advance your career
  • Annual engagement surveys so your voice shapes our workplace culture and policies
