Job Description

About the Opportunity

The Associate Research Scientist will conduct integrated experimental and theoretical research on the mechano-electrochemical behavior of battery materials, electrodes, and cells. The primary function of the position is to advance new knowledge about the materials science and engineering for energy materials and devices, particularly Li-ion batteries and direct recycling of electrodes. The scientist will also lead a research project in collaboration with Saint-Gobain, funded by ARPA-E. The role combines hands-on battery fabrication and characterization with rigorous data analysis, AI, and new material development.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of electrochemistry, battery materials, and electrochemical testing methods; ability to fabricate and assemble battery cells (e.g., coin, pouch, cylindrical) and conduct cycling and diagnostic tests; knowledge of chemo-mechanics and coupled electrochemical–mechanical phenomena in electrodes and active particles; ability to design and execute experiments, including optical or in situ characterization techniques for deformation measurements; ability to analyze and interpret experimental data and develop physics-based models (e.g., porous electrode theory and single-particle models); and familiarity with computational tools for data analysis and/or simulation. These qualifications are normally acquired through a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, or a closely related field, with 0–3 years of relevant research experience in battery systems or electrochemical energy storage.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Lead the ARPA-E project to collaborate with Saint-Gobain on battery lifetime extension

  • Develop new technologies for lithium extraction and direct recycling of battery electrode

  • Write new proposals with the PI for NSF, DOE, and other funding agencies

  • Act as lab manager for lab safety and basic functioning; train students and other group member with battery manufacturing skills.

  • Document and disseminate research findings through publications, reports, and presentations, and contribute to collaborative research efforts
