Job Description

Location

This is an onsite float position, and applicants must be available to work at potentially 9 clinic locations. (Downtown and Metro Indianapolis) Float staff support coverage for PTO, last‑minute call‑ins, higher‑volume clinics, and front‑desk staffing needs. Mileage reimbursements available.

Schedule

  • 40 hours per week, with varying days, times, and clinic assignments
  • Hours will fall Monday–Thursday between 7:15 a.m.–6:15 p.m. and Friday 7:15 a.m.–4:15 p.m.
  • Some shifts will be 7:15 a.m.–6:15 p.m.
  • As a float, there may be last‑minute changes to shift times or assigned locations based on staffing needs

Top Responsibilities

  • Register, schedule, and check in patients
  • Communicate with patients, coworkers, and providers
  • Maintain and update medical records

Department Interaction

  • Send records to referring providers and workers’ compensation adjusters
  • Work with other IU Health clinics for patient transfers
  • Collaborate with the department’s central scheduling team and insurance team

Skills & Attributes

  • Experience with Cerner or Epic is a plus

Training

  • 6–8 weeks of training, beginning at one clinic to learn core responsibilities, then expanding to other clinics
  • Training may be extended as needed
  • Supportive, welcoming culture that encourages questions and feedback

This position oversees patient flow from entry to destination and ensures timely, accurate, and professional service delivery. Responsibilities include:

  • Accurate and timely resolution of patient accounts
  • Collecting information to generate complete and accurate financial and demographic records
  • Insurance verification, prior authorization, and coordination of benefits
  • Communicating with payers and patients to confirm financial information
  • Accurate patient registration and scheduling of recurring appointments
  • Answering incoming calls and directing patients and visitors appropriately
  • Participating in departmental operations and performance‑improvement activities
  • Complying with infection control, equipment training, regulatory standards, and safety programs
  • Ordering, distributing, and maintaining department supplies
  • Meeting productivity, quality, and service standards to support departmental goals

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 0–3 years of customer service or medical office experience preferred
  • Minimum one year of medical office experience or a combination of customer service experience and education in insurance verification, patient registration, or medical terminology strongly preferred
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams)
