Job Description

SDU Microelectronics, part of the Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering (TEK), University of Southern Denmark (SDU), invites applications for a position as Associate Professor in Integrated Circuits for Edge Computing.

We are looking for a researcher to strengthen our research and teaching in integrated circuits for edge computing, with emphasis on energy-efficient analog and mixed-signal CMOS design, open-source chip design methodologies, and hardware accelerators for edge AI, including neuromorphic and near-sensor processing. The successful candidate is expected to develop an independent research profile, contribute to teaching, and attract external funding. The position is available from October 1, 2026, and the start date will be agreed with the successful candidate.

Research Focus Areas

Applicants should have strong experience in integrated circuit design for edge computing, with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Analog and mixed-signal CMOS IC design: data converters, sensor interfaces, references, and power management for energy-constrained devices
  • Open-source chip design methodologies: open-source EDA tools, open PDKs, reproducible IC design flows, and design automation
  • Hardware accelerators for edge AI: domain-specific, neuromorphic, and near-sensor architectures, including RTL design and digital implementation
  • Analog-digital co-design and mixed-signal SoC integration
  • Design and validation flow: layout and physical design, FPGA and ASIC prototyping, multi-project wafer runs, and measurement

Teaching Responsibilities

The successful candidate will contribute to research-based teaching and supervision at Bachelor and Master level in areas such as analog and CMOS circuit design, mixed-signal systems and data converters, open-source chip-design flows, digital design and HDLs, and hardware for accelerators, embedded systems, and edge AI, including design laboratories and project-based courses. Thesis supervision and international training courses in edge and open-source chip design are also part of the role.

What We Offer

At SDU Microelectronics, you will join a research environment with strong expertise in integrated circuits and electronic systems, with freedom to develop independent research directions, access to infrastructure for ASIC design, prototyping, and testing, and support for external funding activities.

Qualification Requirements for Associate Professor

Applicants must:

  • Hold a PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • Have an established, independent research record with publications at an international level
  • Have documented teaching qualifications and the ability to contribute to curriculum development
  • Be able to teach and supervise within IC design, including analog/mixed-signal CMOS, open-source chip-design flows, and hardware for edge AI
  • Have experience with, or a clear plan for, attracting external research funding

Workplace Description

SDU Microelectronics is a research and teaching environment focusing on integrated circuits and electronic systems, covering the path from design concepts and architecture to prototyping, validation, and system integration.

The unit is located at SDU’s main campus in Odense, in the centre of a strong technology ecosystem and with close connections to academic and industrial partners.
