This job oversees the conduct and daily operations of an independent biomedical or clinical research program. Performs independent research, obtains grant funding, publishes research results in high impact journals, and demonstrates public and professional service beyond the department. Mentors junior faculty and leads a research team.

Education
Required - PhD in biological science or related field from an accredited school or MD/DO.

Work Experience
Required - Track record of publications, completed post-doctoral training, and 8 years of research experience.
Preferred - Track record of investigator-initiated research and related funding.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Solid understanding of biological science or related field of study.

  • Knowledge of the process for procuring and managing extramural research funding.

  • Knowledge of federal and non-federal regulations relevant to research.

  • Strong leadership skills and ability to be self-directed, set priorities, delegate, lead a team, and exercise discretion and independent judgment.

  • Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications.

  • Deep knowledge of statistical methods, research design, and research methods and ability to publish research findings.

  • Ability to work and teach in an inter-professional environment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals.

  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills and ability to handle diverse responsibilities and multiple projects at one time under strict deadlines.

  • Ability to travel within state of employment.

Job Duties

  • Independently conducts a variety of complex investigations.

  • Plans, develops, and implements original experimental procedures within the overall scope of the research program.

  • Performs complex technical analyses related to core competency.

  • Pursues scholarly research and publication.

  • Ensures results of research/scholarly work are published, disseminated in high impact peer-reviewed journals, and/or presented at national or international conferences or symposiums.

  • Maintains funding levels to support 50% of salary and program expenses through external grants, philanthropic donations, or contracts.

  • Writes and submits a minimum of 1 major grant per year in order to maintain extramural funding needed to support the research program.

  • Guides, leads, and mentors students and junior scientists (research fellows, employees in research scientist role, junior physician investigators) toward independence.

  • Trains laboratory staff, clinical research coordinators, or other personnel assisting the program.

  • Directs work and serves as scientific leader for the research program.

  • Participates in external review of research program every 3 years.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.

Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue, but exposure or potential for exposure may occur.

The incumbent works with patients who have known or suspected communicable diseases and may enter isolation rooms. There may be an occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.

Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste. The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.
