Contributes to the overall success of MD Financial Management and MD Private Investment Counsel in Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

The Associate Portfolio Manager (APM) occupies a key role within MD Financial Management. The APM’s primary responsibility is to provide client relationship management for discretionary portfolio management services offered to higher net worth MD clients, in accordance with MD Private Investment Counsel’s (MD PIC) investment counselling process.

On an ongoing basis, the APM is responsible for the day-to-day relationship management of all clients based on MD PIC service standards, to ensure all portfolios are compliant with the clients’ Investment Policy Statements and to maintain an ongoing relationship with MD’s Financial Consultants.

You will also assist MD clients and their families in achieving their personal financial goals. Working as a partner with MD’s Specialist Advisors, you will leverage your years of experience and strong client focus to lead and/or contribute to comprehensive financial plans and specific investment strategies for clients. You will identify and develop new opportunities to prospect and grow the client base, while ensuring retention of clients through strong relationship building and the development of comprehensive financial plans.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

  • Champion a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Foster, maintain and strengthen client relationships through regular, comprehensive contact in accordance with the service commitment made to MD Private Investment Counsel’s clients.
  • Provide discretionary management for a book of MD Private Investment Counsel clients. Duties include the assessment of client objectives and risk tolerance, recommendations on appropriate investment strategy, selection of individual securities, and ongoing review of client portfolios.
  • Ongoing client review responsibilities include discussion of portfolio performance, periodic review of appropriateness of objectives, review of tax situation and cash flow needs.
  • Ensure all portfolios are compliant with the clients’ Investment Policy Statements.
  • In conjunction with the Financial Consultants, work to assist in developing client understanding and education of Private Investment Counsel products.
  • Network internally and externally to foster relationships and ensure the value proposition relating to Private Investment Counsel services is promoted and well understood.
  • Lead and/or contribute to the development of comprehensive financial plans for MD PIC clients in the areas of Goal setting, Financial Analysis & Management (i.e. cash flow, budgeting), Investment Planning, Taxation, Retirement Planning, Insurance and Risk Management, and Wills and Estate Planning.
  • As part of a broader network of MD financial experts, facilitate a team approach by actively attracting new clients to MD Private Investment Counsel (discretionary investment management), while referring to Scotiatrust (estate and trust services), Scotia Wealth Insurance Services (SWIS), and MD Banking solutions (Scotiabank). You will also work to ensure client needs are pro-actively addressed in alignment with their current financial situation and life stage as well as their future aspirations.
  • Keep current on issues affecting the financial affairs of clients, including a general knowledge of income tax, investment trends and products, as well as any other issues impacting clients.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We’d love to work with you if you have:

  • Completed Level 1 of the CFA or hold the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) designation.
  • A minimum of 24 months of relevant investment management experience, specific to becoming registered as Associate Advising Representative with the applicable provincial securities commission.
  • Possess a college or university degree.
  • Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation (or in Quebec, PL Fin).
  • Life License (LLQP) is an asset. Completion of the Group Annuity Sector (PQPAV) - Quebec offices only - is an asset.
  • Strong working knowledge of personal financial planning.
  • You have a breadth and depth or core financial products and a high-level of comfort and confidence in presenting this information to clients.
  • Strong computer skills with an above average understanding of MS Word, MS Excel, and portfolio management and financial planning software.

In addition to French, the successful candidate must also have sufficient knowledge of English, as the work involves interacting and collaborating regularly with groups and individuals based in Toronto, as well as constantly interacting with other people, including clients, who speak English, locally and elsewhere.
