The Phlebotomist supports all sections of the Clinical Outpatient Laboratory through proper phlebotomy techniques as well as proper specimen accessioning, processing and related activities. This position will use correct blood collection tubes, ordering correct test from requisitions. Match identifiers to information on requisition and labels. Obtain blood from patient using proper phlebotomy techniques for clinical or medical testing, transfusions, donation, or research. Resolve specimen and patient problems as they arise. Follows all UAMS Department of Pathology Policies and Procedures for blood collection. Obtains patient specimens at an acceptable rate.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School, GED or formal education equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 1 year experience working in a clinical laboratory or as a medical assistant
• CPR, CAN, PBT, MLA, or CPT Certification

Job Requirements:

• Use patient identifiers to match information on requisition and labels.
• Successful performance and completion of blood draws from patients using proper phlebotomy techniques for clinical or medial testing, transfusions, donation, or research
• Collection of various specimens, properly labeling specimens, timely transportation to the clinical laboratory, and documenting collection information as appropriate.
• Successfully utilizing techniques using appropriate collection methodology, which may include straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture and or other specimen collection as required.
• Reduces patient anxiety by providing a calm environment for patients before, during, and after the collection process.
• Works closely daily with internal clinic staff and various departments to resolve issues with patient blood draws.
• Maintains strict confidentiality when necessary.
• Contacts the appropriate provider if a patient does not have active lab orders in EPIC or if there are questions about patient orders.
• Contacts the clinical laboratory if there are questions regarding specific orders or if special specimen collection tubes are needed.
• Utilizes proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to ensure patient and personal safety.
• Exercises all laboratory safety precautions and adheres to lab procedures as stated in procedure manuals.
• Performs other duties as needed.
