Job Description

Columbia Engineering invites applications for an Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, starting July 1, 2027. Appointments will be made at the rank of Associate Professor without tenure, Associate Professor with tenure, or Professor with tenure, depending on qualifications. Exceptional candidates currently at the Assistant Professor level with a strong independent research program are also encouraged to apply.

We seek candidates whose research advances the foundations, methods, and applications of modeling and decision-making under uncertainty. We particularly encourage applications from those who will expand the department's footprint in AI research, including reinforcement learning and work relevant to supply chains, service platforms, finance, and the design and operation of AI systems.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in operations research, engineering, management science, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, or in a closely related area by the start date of the appointment. Successful candidates are expected to build a strong research record, to contribute to the department’s educational programs, and be committed to service to the department and school. Columbia encourages multi-disciplinary research and collaborations across academic units on the campus. The candidate will benefit from interactions with various faculty from the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Data Science Institute, Columbia Business School, Columbia Climate School, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and the School of Arts and Science.

Applicants for this position at the Associate Professor without tenure level must have engaged in pioneering research and have a history of effective teaching. Applicants for this position at the tenured level (Associate or Full Professor) must have a demonstrated record of outstanding research accomplishments, excellent teaching credentials, and established leadership in the field.
