The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenured faculty position at the rank of Full or Associate Professor, beginning Fall 2027. We are looking for an outstanding scholar with a solid record of publications and an international reputation in the area of Indian languages and society, including sociolinguistics and multilingualism. The successful candidate will also serve as Director of the Mattoo Center for India Studies.

The successful candidate will hold the academic rank of a tenured Full or Associate Professor in the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies. They will teach two undergraduate or graduate courses per semester (of which one course will be released per year for directing the Center), in areas such as, but not limited to: Language and Society in South Asia, Multilingualism, Language Contact, Introduction to Indian Civilization, Language in the Study of India, English in India and World Englishes. They will complement existing scholarship on India/South Asia in the department and contribute to the undergraduate major in AAAS and the Minor in South Asian Studies, the two master’s programs (in Asian and Asian American Studies and in the History of Philosophy, East and West), the doctoral programs in related departments. They will collaborate with and contribute to academic units, such as the Mattoo Center for India Studies and the Nirmal and Augustina Mattoo Endowed Chair in Classical Indic Humanities.

The successful candidate will also serve as Director of the Bishembarnath and Sheela Mattoo Center for India Studies, an internationally respected academic resource and a vibrant community asset, dedicated to promoting a better appreciation of India’s contribution to human knowledge for the benefit of the university and the community. Over the last 30 years, the Center has exposed over 25,000 students to various aspects of India. Supported by the Center’s endowments, the Director will provide academic leadership and strategic direction to the Center by conducting research projects, including facilitating faculty research with grants and collaboration with scholars in India; teaching of courses on India; organizing seminars, conferences and endowed lectures; administering scholarships and travel grants; developing the India Reference Library; publishing books and journals; conducting outreach programs; and advancing a robust engagement with the public and the Indian American community in the New York metropolitan area to grow the Center’s resources.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

1. Ph.D. from a reputed university in South Asian Studies, Linguistics, Literature, or a related field, focused on the languages of India, with reference to sociolinguistics, multilingualism, translation, or related topics;
2. Evidence of a strong research program, quality publications, and high standing in the international research community;
3. Deep knowledge of Indian civilization and society, its cultural roots and global impact, as well as issues and developments in India Studies;
4. Effective teaching experience at the university level;
5. Knowledge of at least one of the languages of India.
6. Demonstrated administrative experience and leadership potential in a university context;
7. Effective engagement with Indian American communities in terms of outreach and advancement;
8. Eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Knowledge of Sanskrit, classical India, and Indian knowledge systems
2. Experience in building (or potential to build) a vibrant India Studies program
3. Experience in working with archives in India;
4. Interest and experience in organizing a Study Abroad program in India
