Associate of Dance
The Department of Dance at Barnard College, Columbia University, is seeking a full-time Associate to begin July 1, 2027. We are seeking an accomplished professional dancer with extensive experience in concert modern, post-modern, and ballet dance forms.
The Barnard College Department of Dance, located in a world dance capital, offers an interdisciplinary program that integrates the study of dance within a liberal arts setting of intellectual and creative exploration. The Dance Major builds upon practice and performance with accomplished artists, and a rich array of Dance Studies courses with outstanding research scholars, allowing students’ creative work to develop in dialogue with critical inquiry into the history, culture, theory, and forms of Western and non-Western performance, typically enhanced by study in other disciplines.
The teaching load is 3 + 3 courses per year and includes ballet and modern studio courses from introductory through advanced levels, as well as production management. Associates are reviewed in their third year of full-time service, with the possibility for reappointment and consideration for promotion to Senior Associate in the seventh year; subsequent reviews typically occur on a seven-year cycle.
The ideal candidate would also have extensive performance experience with professional modern, post-modern, and ballet companies and comprehensive teaching experience in an academic setting. This individual must demonstrate a record of sustained creative work, possess strong organizational skills, and demonstrate a genuine gift and commitment to advising students. Additionally, the candidate should have substantial experience in rehearsal directing and production management. The combination of expertise and dedication is essential to support the artistic and educational needs of our program.
