WSP has an exciting career opportunity for an Associate Mechanical Engineer to join our Pump Stations and Pipelines team in Tucson, AZ; Lakewood, CO; Tempe, AZ or Houston, TX. This individual will have the opportunity to be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Our ideal candidate is well rounded and may have a background in mining or oil and gas in pipeline design and configuration. In this role you will provides support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers for the planning, design, analysis, and implementation of hydraulic, mechanical, and pipeline systems on mining, industrial, and infrastructure projects. Tasks may include hydraulic modeling, pipeline design, pump system evaluation, equipment selection, engineering calculations, and preparation of technical deliverables. You will generate accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding assigned engineering analyses, studies, and design packages. Additionally, you will ensure that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for safety, operability, maintainability, and functionality.

Location: Tucson, AZ location is preferred. Depending on candidate preference, this individual can also work in our Tempe, AZ, Lakewood, CO or Houston, TX offices.

Your Impact

  • With minimal supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing engineering data from site investigations, surveys, vendor information, design drawings, process information, and technical reports to support project development and design.
  • Perform hydraulic calculations and engineering analyses for water, slurry, process fluid, and compressed air systems including pipe sizing, pressure loss calculations, pump evaluations, and hydraulic grade line development.
  • Assist with development and review of hydraulic models, system curves, pump station designs, pipeline alignments, and surge protection concepts using industry-standard software tools.
  • Support the design and selection of pipelines, pumps, valves, piping specialties, and associated mechanical equipment for mining and industrial facilities.
  • Prepare engineering deliverables including design criteria, technical specifications, datasheets, calculation packages, piping and valve schedules, hydraulic reports, PFDs, P&IDs, and drawing markups.
  • Assist with evaluating alternative design concepts and developing practical engineering solutions that balance technical, operational, and project requirements.
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, electrical, instrumentation, process, and geotechnical disciplines to support multidisciplinary project execution.
  • Write technical reports summarizing engineering analyses, design assumptions, findings, recommendations, and project outcomes.
  • Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification, constructability reviews, cost estimate development, bid evaluations, and engineering studies.
  • Support field investigations, commissioning activities, troubleshooting efforts, and construction support assignments as required.
  • Assist with proposal preparation, scope development, and engineering planning activities in support of business development initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with engineers, designers, clients, vendors, and project teams on mining and industrial infrastructure projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post-education experience.
  • Familiarity with fluid mechanics, hydraulic system design principles, and pipeline engineering fundamentals.
  • Experience developing engineering calculations including pipe sizing, pressure loss calculations, pump selection evaluations, and hydraulic grade line assessments.
  • Familiarity with hydraulic modeling software such as AFT Fathom, AFT Impulse, KYPIPE, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with pipeline stress analysis software such as CAESAR II, AutoPIPE, or equivalent.
  • Understanding of piping systems, pumps, valves, slurry transport systems, and fluid conveyance infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with engineering design processes, project delivery, and multidisciplinary coordination within a consulting engineering environment.
  • Experience preparing and interpreting engineering documents including technical specifications, datasheets, PFDs, P&IDs, engineering calculations, and technical reports.
  • Strong analytical mindset with an ability to evaluate technical problems and develop practical solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multitasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic project environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and engineering calculation development.
  • Experience with discipline-specific software such as AFT Fathom, AFT Impulse, CAESAR II, AutoPIPE, AutoCAD, or similar engineering applications.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety, and conduct policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Experience supporting mining, minerals processing, slurry transport, tailings, water conveyance, or industrial pipeline projects.
  • Experience performing hydraulic modeling and interpretation of hydraulic grade lines, pressure profiles, pump curves, and system curves.
  • Familiarity with transient (surge) analysis.
  • Familiarity with HDPE, steel, stainless steel, ductile iron, or abrasion-resistant piping systems.
  • Prior consulting engineering or EPCM project experience.
  • Field engineering, commissioning, or construction support experience.
  • Active participation in professional engineering organizations.

Compensation

Expected Salary (Colorado only): $70,400 - $99,100

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position within the state of Colorado, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
