Job Description
General Description:
The Associate Instructor position teaches developmental and transfer-level courses in Mathematics. Full-time teaching faculty are responsible for teaching various courses in the designated discipline/field of study. Teaching will potentially be in a variety of formats including face to face, remote, and online.

The Associate Instructor position is a restricted appointment with an instructional load of 33 to 39 credit hours and 39 to 49 contact hours over the academic year. This position is relieved of most administrative and governance duties to spend time in student support and student success related activities. The Associate Instructor contract contains no expectation or guarantees of continued employment.

This position is not telework eligible. *


Duties and Tasks:
  • The primary responsibility of an Associate Instructor at Northern Virginia Community College is to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis is on excellent teaching.
  • Faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become better workers and better citizens.
  • As a part of this primary responsibility, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly
  • Submit required records and reports routinely
  • Teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; conduct virtual student conferences as needed
  • Adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Faculty are also expected to maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization.

** This position is restricted and is funded with non-continuous or non-recurring funding and is subject to continuation based on fiscal year funds and the needs of the College.

Employees must reside in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
KSAs:
  • Ability to use technology to enhance instruction.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical and oral/written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively teach online, in classrooms and in labs.

Minimum Work Experience:
  • Master’s degree in mathematics or a master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Mathematics. Qualifying degree and coursework must be awarded by and completed with a regionally accredited institution.
  • Previous experience teaching Mathematics and Developmental Mathematics at the college or university level.
  • Experience with computer-based learning systems.
  • Experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment; or commitment to do so as a faculty member at NOVA

Additional Considerations
Additional Considerations:
  • Experience teaching hybrid and/or online courses including synchronous remote and emporium style classes.
  • Experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds and of varying levels of math proficiency.
  • Community college teaching experience.
