This is a provisional appointment.

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Zoning, Inspectional Services Department.

Responsibilities

  • Examines building specifications and plans to ensure compliance with the fire codes, building codes, and other related laws, ordinances, or regulations in the Fire Department.
  • Performs professional and detailed examination of architects' and engineers' plans and computations for proposed new buildings and other structures and for alterations to existing buildings and structures in order to determine whether the proposed methods of construction and the materials to be used are in accordance with the requirements of the Fire Dept. concerning any matters involving restrictions on building methods and materials.
  • Examines building applications and plans to ensure compliance with the Mass. Building Code, Boston Zoning Ordinances, and other related laws, ordinances, regulations, codes, NFPA Standards, and Federal Standards, with considerable latitude for independent decision-making ability relative to in-depth review of building plans, mechanical systems, and electrical requirements of new and altered structures within the City of Boston.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in the fire protection field, examination or interpretation of plans and associated computations for the construction and alteration of buildings and structures, with special knowledge of architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering principles required.
  • A Bachelor's Degree with a major in mechanical, chemical, civil, structural, fire protection, or similar engineering discipline is required.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of the Mass. Building Code and all rules and regulations applicable to that code, the fire prevention code, as well as the ability to interpret rules and regulations relating to the construction and alteration of buildings and structures.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of building construction and current knowledge of fire fighting science and technique as related to modern building construction is preferred.
  • A multilingual candidate is also preferred.
  • Applicants meeting the minimum entrance qualifications will be considered for this position.
  • Registered Fire Protection Engineer preferred.
