We have an exciting opportunity as an Associate Human Factors Engineer on a 12month fixed term contract and this role will involve the following

The role of Associate Human Factors Engineer is to support the development of innovative diagnostic products through user-centred design and usability engineering activities. This role offers exposure to the full human factors lifecycle, from user research and concept development through usability testing and validation, while working within a multidisciplinary product development team.

Key Responsibilities

Human Factors & Usability

  • Support the planning, execution, and reporting of usability studies.
  • Assist with user research, task analysis, and use environment assessments.
  • Develop study materials, prototypes, and data collection tools.
  • Analyse usability findings and support design recommendations.

User Needs & Risk Management

  • Support the development of user profiles, use scenarios, and task analyses.
  • Contribute to use-related risk assessments, including URRA and uFMEA activities.
  • Maintain traceability between user needs, risks, critical tasks, and mitigations.

Design & Product Development

  • Contribute to concept generation and usability-focused design improvements.
  • Support prototyping and evaluation of design solutions.
  • Collaborate with R&D, Design, and Labelling teams to enhance product usability.
  • Provide input into IFUs, quick reference guides, and user-facing materials.

Regulatory & Quality

  • Assist in preparing human factors documentation, including study protocols, reports, and HFER inputs.
  • Ensure work complies with internal quality systems and design control requirements.
  • Support usability evidence generation for regulatory submissions.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Factors, Psychology, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Design, Ergonomics, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 0–2 years of experience in Human Factors Engineering, Usability Engineering, Ergonomics, Human-Centred Design, or a related field.
  • Coursework, academic projects, internships, co-op placements, or practical experience in human factors, usability, ergonomics, or human-centred design.
  • Basic understanding of human factors engineering principles, usability engineering methods, and/or cognitive psychology.
  • Familiarity with medical device development processes and regulated environments is desirable.
  • Master's degree in Human Factors, Psychology, Ergonomics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field is an advantage.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Understanding of human factors, usability, ergonomics, and user-centred design principles.
  • Experience supporting usability studies, including participant observation, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate technical, usability, and design documentation.
  • Strong analytical, organisational, and problem-solving capabilities with attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present findings clearly.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Comfortable working within quality systems, standard operating procedures, and regulated environments.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and eager to learn and develop within a Human Factors Engineering function.
