What you'll be doing

As a member of the Capital Markets team, you will aid corporate, government, and institutional clients with innovative solutions to help them grow and invest actively throughout North America, Latin America, and key financial centers around the world. Our mission is to bring Canadian Capital Markets products to Canada and the rest of the world and bring the world to Canada. CIBC Capital Markets, Global Investment Banking provides equity and debt underwriting as well as corporate finance advisory services to corporations. Within Global Investment Banking, the Financial Institutions group is specifically focused on providing strategic advisory, merger, and acquisition (M&A) execution and capital raising expertise to clients across the financial services landscape, such as banks, insurance, asset & wealth management, and specialty finance companies. There is an extensive amount of interaction with other groups within the firm to provide clients with customized financing and advisory solutions.

As an Associate in the Investment Banking group, you will be expected to provide a broad range of analytical, research and presentation preparation support to all the professionals within the group. Associates are assigned to a variety of transactions and advisory projects, such as mergers & acquisitions, brokerage transactions, divestitures, equity and debt financings, and strategic advisory projects. As part of the Investment Banking group, you will gain exposure to working with individuals from various groups across the firm globally. A team approach to executing coverage and financing assignments is designed to provide progressive, on-the-job training

The expected annualized base salary for this role is $135,000.

The base salary is determined by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s skills, experience, and job-related knowledge, as well as geographic location and specific business needs. Our compensation philosophy supports ongoing growth and development, enabling progression within the salary range as team members advance in their roles.

In addition to base pay, compensation for this role includes participation in an annual discretionary incentive or bonus program.

How you'll succeed

• Client Engagement – Play an active role in the execution of client mandate. Conduct deal related due diligence activities and present findings internally. Participate in developing investor presentation materials and in “road show” marketing activities. Work with outside working group members including legal advisors, accounting advisors, auditors, etc. Responsible for the overall information and communication flow on deal teams
• Relationship Building – Take advantage of in-depth technical and industry knowledge, as well as the geopolitical environment to generate ideas/opportunities that can be discussed with the relevant relationship manager and/or deal/coverage team. You will coordinate client-focused and/or deal-focused “brainstorming” sessions with relevant team members and product specialists. Liaise with other units of CIBC Capital Markets in preparing proposals for clients. Develop relationships and actively communicate with various appropriate contacts at the client. Develop and maintain an internal network with product groups, other business groups, etc. Develop and maintain an external network with the market (i.e., key stakeholders, prospects, etc.) and support CIBC’s image through involvement in community activities.
• Teamwork – Partner with your team to connect clients with opportunities. Participate in cross-functional teams and liaise with other units of CIBC Capital Markets in executing mandates or preparing proposals for clients. Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills to develop, manage and leverage relationships with clients, and internal and/or external business partners. Unquestioned professionalism, ethics and reputation and established ability to exercise strong independent judgment when making business decisions and/or representing CIBC Capital Markets

Who you are

• You can demonstrate 3-5 years of experience in real estate, investment banking, corporate finance, and/or private equity. CA, CPA, or CFA designations are an asset. It is preferred if you have detailed professional level knowledge of the Canadian real estate sector.
• You're digitally savvy. You have excellent analytical abilities, including demonstrated knowledge of valuation techniques and practices. Knowledge of accounting principles relating to financial statement preparation and business combinations. Strong technical skills as it relates to Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), industry technology (Bloomberg & FactSet) and applicable software. Experience with Argus Enterprise is strongly preferred.
• You’re passionate about people. You have well-developed written and verbal communication skills sufficient to provide detailed explanation and interpretation of factual and conceptual information and ideas related to technical and conceptual issues.
• You know that details matter. You are an extremely dedicated and motivated individual with high career aspirations. Must be capable of assuming important levels of responsibility within brief time frames
