Job Description

Start your IT engineering career at the heart of global financial markets

Do you enjoy problem‑solving and want to start a career in IT where your work really matters? Are you curious about how technology supports the stability, safety and efficiency of financial markets worldwide?

Euroclear is a leading global provider of post‑trade services for the financial industry. Headquartered in Brussels and operating in more than 15 countries, we ensure the settlement, custody and servicing of securities transactions across borders and asset classes. In simple terms, we are a bank for banks, operating at the very core of the global financial system.

Technology is central to this mission. Our IT platforms support business‑essential, time‑critical processes and must deliver reliability, security and performance every single day. This is why Euroclear continues to invest heavily in engineering excellence, modernisation and the development of early‑career talent.

Your Tech Environment

You will join Group Business Solutions (GBS), the division responsible for delivering and running Euroclear’s core IT solutions. GBS teams build, enhance and support applications used daily by financial institutions worldwide, deploying change in a controlled way while ensuring production stability in complex, high‑reliability environments.

The role is based in Kraków, a growing and diverse tech hub within Euroclear. The Kraków site offers a welcoming environment for early‑career professionals, with strong local support, opportunities to connect across teams, and a culture that values learning, curiosity and collaboration.

The Tech Newbies Programme

To support graduates and early‑career talent, Euroclear created the Tech Newbies Programme in Kraków. This is a structured onboarding journey combining training, mentoring and hands‑on experience within real IT teams.

No prior professional IT experience is required. The programme is designed to help you build solid engineering foundations while discovering how large‑scale, mission‑critical systems operate in practice.

Role Purpose

As an Associate Engineer (Mainframe), you will take your first steps as an engineer working on business‑essential applications that support global financial markets.

You will be trained in enterprise mainframe technologies and progressively grow in autonomy and responsibility, contributing to the development, maintenance and support of production‑grade systems. The role is designed as a structured entry point into IT engineering, with a clear development path toward the Engineer role in line with the Euroclear Engineering Career Ladder.

In addition to technical skills, you will gain exposure to delivery processes, operational constraints and business flows within GBS. Over time, this experience can also open opportunities to move toward other roles such as Test Analyst, Business Analyst or delivery coordination roles, depending on your interests, strengths and organisational needs.

Why Mainframe

Mainframe technology is rarely taught at university, yet it remains the backbone of many of the world’s most critical financial systems.

At Euroclear, mainframes:

  • support high‑volume, time‑critical business operations,
  • run applications requiring exceptional reliability, performance and security,
  • process large volumes of data with predictable, industrial‑grade robustness.

The skills you develop — engineering discipline, system thinking and a reliability mindset — are highly transferable and remain valuable throughout your IT career, including beyond mainframe environments.

What You Will Do

You will start in a guided environment and progressively grow in responsibility and independence.

  • Participate in the Tech Newbies Mainframe onboarding programme, combining structured training and hands‑on learning
  • Contribute to the development, maintenance and support of applications running on time‑critical infrastructure
  • Learn to code, test, document and integrate changes in a controlled enterprise environment
  • Support testing and operational activities related to the applications you work on
  • Contribute to production stability through defect management and incident analysis, with coaching from experienced engineers
  • Produce technical and design documentation and progressively contribute to design discussions

Your scope will expand steadily, moving from supported execution toward increased ownership and accountability.

Learning & Onboarding

During the initial phase, you will follow a dedicated mainframe learning journey designed to build both technical depth and operational understanding. This includes:

  • exposure to enterprise mainframe environments and operational processes,
  • PL/1 development and its associated toolchain,
  • data, messaging, scheduling and production integration concepts,
  • real‑life case studies reflecting production‑grade constraints.

This foundation prepares you for long‑term contribution and continued growth.

Career Growth

This role is a starting point, not a final destination. Over time, you will build technical depth, autonomy and a strong understanding of large‑scale systems, typically progressing toward the Engineer role

As your experience grows, you may:

  • deepen your expertise on core platforms,
  • broaden your exposure to other technologies as systems evolve,
  • work more closely with internal clients and stakeholders to understand business needs,
  • contribute to design activities, impact analyses and solution shaping,
  • support and coach less experienced colleagues.

The experience gained in this role can also enable future moves within GBS, depending on individual aspirations and organisational needs.

Who This Role Is For

This role is well suited for graduates or early‑career professionals who want to build a long‑term career in IT engineering within a structured, high‑reliability environment.

It is a good fit if you:

  • enjoy learning and progressively taking on responsibility,
  • are comfortable starting in a structured setup and growing toward more autonomous engineering work,
  • like working in team‑oriented environments where quality and collaboration matter,
  • are curious about how technology supports critical business processes.

Required Skills and Mindset

More than a specific technology background, we are looking for curiosity and a strong learning mindset

You bring:

  • a degree in Mathematics, Engineering, IT, Science or a related field (Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD),
  • strong analytical and problem‑solving skills,
  • curiosity about IT systems and new technologies,
  • an interest in finance or capital markets,
  • the ability to adapt in an international and diverse environment,
  • a self‑learning attitude and willingness to continuously develop your skills.
