Job Description

This is what you will do:

The Associate Director, Data Scientist will lead the development of advanced data utilization platforms that integrate and analyze diverse data from both inside and outside the organization. Through collaboration with business units, cross-functional teams, and key stakeholders throughout and beyond the company, you will be responsible for designing and promoting a scientifically grounded, cross-organizational value chain. By leveraging AI and data science, you will aim to address each patient’s unmet medical needs, promote early diagnosis and expand treatment opportunities for those with rare diseases, and contribute to the realization of health equity.

Additionally, by providing scientific insights and analytical models, you will support management decision-making and strategy development from a data science perspective, contribute to patient-centered value creation, and optimize internal business processes. You are strongly expected to proactively utilize digital technologies, and play a pivotal role as a driving force in shaping the future of the rare disease field.

You will be responsible for:

  • Designing, developing, and deploying predictive models and machine learning algorithms for healthcare data
  • Developing data marts for customer data, taking data utilization requirements into consideration
  • Building and operating robust data pipelines for large-scale data analysis
  • Visualizing complex analytical results using tools such as Python, R, Tableau, and Power BI to ensure clarity
  • End-to-end algorithm development and validation to support clinical and operational decision-making
  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders to identify issues, formulate analytical approaches, and provide practical recommendations
  • Continuously evaluating and improving algorithms, models, and workflows from the perspectives of scalability and accuracy

You will need to have:

  • Hands-on experience in data science technologies: Data analysis and machine learning/AI model design, development, and implementation using Python, R, or similar languages
  • Advanced knowledge and expertise in statistical analysis and algorithm development, especially for complex challenges in the medical and healthcare sectors
  • Experience in building data platforms and managing big data: Design and operation of cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure), databases, and ETL processes
  • Data visualization and reporting skills: Ability to communicate data insights clearly to stakeholders using tools such as Power BI
  • Project management and cross-functional team collaboration: Proven track record of driving cross-functional projects in cooperation with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Understanding and practical application of advanced technologies: Interest and expertise in AI, generative AI (GenAI), natural language processing, and other cutting-edge technologies

We would prefer for you to have:

  • Experience in healthcare data standardization and utilization
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations and data privacy standards
  • Experience and knowledge in the rare disease domain or healthcare fields, especially with pharmaceutical development, bioinformatics, or patient outcome improvement
  • Logical thinking and problem-solving skills: Ability to lead the process from issue analysis through strategy to execution
  • Business-level proficiency in Japanese and English
  • Master’s degree or higher in data science, informatics, bioinformatics, statistics, or related disciplines
