Position

The Chief Business Officer (CBO) is responsible for the financial and business operations of PeabodyCollegeofEducationandHumanDevelopment,includingdailybusinessprocesses, budgeting,forecasting,financialreporting,financialmodelingandanalysis,strategicplanning, human capital management, sponsored project administration, policy development and implementation, compliance and internal controls, and capital planning and budgeting.

Reporting jointly to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Finance and to the Dean of Peabody College, the CBO is a key advisor to the Dean on strategic, financial, human resource, and operational topics.The CBO is an effective leader, natural collaborator, and skilled communicator who builds trusting relationships across Peabody and the University.The ideal candidate will have a strategic, decision-enabling mindset and keen financial and business acumenthatwillallowthemtoeffectivelyadvisetheDean,associatedeans,departmentchairs, administrators, and other key stakeholders.

TheCBOservesastheprimarypointofcontactrelativetofinancialandbusinessoperationsfor Peabody College, working to accomplish the priorities of the College and of the broader University by leading and facilitating interactions with and between many of the core University offices that support the various schools, including Finance, People Culture and Belonging, General Counsel, Risk Management, Facilities, Development and Alumni Relations, and Vanderbilt University IT.

Vanderbilt degrees offered by Peabody include the bachelor of science, master of education, master of public policy, master of science, doctor of education, and doctor of philosophy. Peabody serves more than 2,500 students, both on campus and online, with a full-time faculty of 200.

KeyFunctionsandExpected Performance:

StrategicManagement

  • ServeastheprimarybusinessadvisortotheDeanofPeabodyCollege,associatedeans, and departmental leaders.

  • ServeasamemberoftheCollege’sexecutiveleadershipteam,providingcounseland overseeing implementation of operational and financial activities in support of the College.

  • Actastheprimaryfinancial,business,andoperationalliaisonfortheCollegetoFinance and various other core University offices.

FinancialOversight

  • Developandmanagetheannualoperatingbudget,monthlyforecasts,andmanagement reporting for the College, including monthly budget variance analysis.

  • Analyzefinancialdatatosupportbudgetinganddecision-making,providingclear, actionable insights.

  • Supportcapitalplanningbydevelopingtheannualcapitalbudget,planningforcapital project financing, and monitoring capital expenditures.

  • Ensure effective utilization of gift and endowment funding while complying with donor restrictions.ReporttoFinanceandDevelopmentandAlumniRelationsperiodicallyon gift and endowment utilization.

  • CollaboratewithDevelopmentandAlumniRelationsondonoragreements,giftand endowment accounting, and project management.

  • Oversee contract and grant administration, including grant expenditures, effort certification, cost-sharing, cost transfers, and grant closeout.Collaborate with the PeabodyResearchOfficeongrantplanningandbudgeting.CollaboratewithResearch Finance on grant accounting, reporting, and compliance matters.

  • Plan, oversee, and manage various programmatic revenue sources, including fees, royalties,andmedicalcenterserviceagreements.Reviewandapprovegeneralaccounts receivable and deposit transactions.

  • Overseemonthly,quarterly,andyear-endaccountingactivities,ensuringaccurate accounting and classification of transactions and year-end accruals.

  • Implement and monitor effective internal controls for the processing of financial transactions,includingsegregationofduties,accesscontrols,andmonitoringand evaluating financial results and budget variances.

OperationalOversight

  • Develop,implement,andimproveoperationalpolicies,procedures,andbusiness practices.

  • TrainandcoachdepartmentandDean’sOfficeadministratorsonfinancialand operational systems and procedures.

  • Proactivelydriveorganizationalchangeandprocessimprovementswithaneyetoward optimizing effectiveness and maximizing efficiency.

  • Anticipatetheneedsoffacultyandadministrators,actasanadvisorandthoughtpartner to them, and identify and facilitate potential solutions to emerging or novel issues.

  • Reviewandapproveprocurementrequests,employeeexpensereports,personnel transactions, retroactive cost transfers, and other transactions as appropriate.

  • ActasprojectmanagerforPeabodyfacultyfunds,managingprojectsetup,processing funding entries, and making necessary adjustments to faculty fund projects.

  • IncoordinationwithFinance,overseetheOneCard(paymentcard)program,including setting spending limits, enforcing payment card policy, and approving transactions as appropriate.Closely related to the One Card program, oversee the research subject participant payment program.

  • In collaboration with Purchasing, General Counsel, and the Provost’s Office (as appropriate),coordinate,review,andexecutecontracts,agreements,andmemorandaof understanding on behalf of the College.

  • CollaboratewiththeDeanand/orFacilitiesManageronspace,facilities,event,and equipment needs.

HumanCapitalManagement

  • Recruit, develop, and retain high-performing business and administrative professionals whodisplaycreativeproblemsolving,resourcefulness,andastrongserviceorientation.

  • SupervisePeabodyDean’sOfficefinancialstaffanddepartmentbusinessadministrators.

  • Cultivateacultureofcollaboration,accountability,stewardship,compliance,andeffective communication.

  • Review and approve job postings, salary quotes, promotions, reclassifications, and variousotherpersonneltransactions,ensuringpersonnelheadcountandfundingremains consistent with College budget objectives.

  • Collaborate with the Dean on faculty recruitment, promotion, retention, and compensation.Implement promotions, annual salary increases, retention adjustments, andotherfacultycompensationadjustmentsasneeded.Calculateandimplementfaculty administrative salary supplements.

  • Overseetheannualmeritincreaseprocessesforfacultyandstaff,incollaborationwith the Dean, the Provost’s Office, Finance, and People Culture and Belonging.

  • Oversee complex personnel transactions and maintain compliance with numerous statutoryandVanderbiltpolicies,includingfederaleffortcertification,wageandhour laws, federal income tax reporting, FMLA/TMLA, ADAAA, etc.

  • Collaborate with the Office of People Culture and Belonging to administer staff performancemanagementand/ordisciplinaryactionsasappropriate.Assistandsupport the Dean with faculty affairs and employee relations issues as needed.

  • CollaboratewiththeOfficeofPeopleCultureandBelongingandtheProtectionofMinors Office on background clearance policy and compliance matters.

  • CollaboratewiththeUniversityConflictsOfficeontheconflict-of-interestdisclosure process and conflict management plans.

Supervisory Relationships

ThispositionhassupervisoryresponsibilityoverthePeabodyDean’sOfficefinanceand administrative team, as well as departmental business managers.The position reports administrativelytotheAssistantViceChancellorforFinanceandfunctionallytotheDeanof Peabody College.

Educationand Certifications

  • Abachelor’sdegreeinbusiness,finance,economics,orrelatedfieldfromanaccredited institution of higher education is required; master’s degree preferred.

  • Adegreeinaccounting,finance,businessadministrationorsimilarisstronglypreferred.

Experienceand Skills

  • 10+yearsofexperienceinstrategicfinanceoroperationalleadership,ideallyinahigher education environment, is required

  • Experiencewithsponsoredprojectadministrationandfamiliaritywithallphasesofthe grant award cycle, from pre-award to post-award and closeout, especially in a higher education environment, is required

  • Strongfinancialacumenandanalyticalskills;experiencewithbudgeting,planning,and financial management is necessary

  • Exceptionalcommunicationandinterpersonalskills;abilitytoinfluenceandleadacross all levels is necessary
