The Business Law Unit is seeking a talented lawyer to join the Small Business and Personal Insurance Law Team (SB/PI) as Associate Counsel. This law team is highly partnered with the property and casualty insurance business units and provides a wide array of legal services, including advice and support relating to product drafting and development; rate and form filings; underwriting practices; sales and distribution; operations; contract negotiation and drafting; regulatory inquiries and complaints; policy reformations, rescissions and reinstatements; legislative and regulatory developments (state and federal); major business initiatives and transactions; and anything else that may impact the underwriting and sale of insurance. As the main point of contact for all legal-related business issues, the SB/PI Law Team regularly coordinates with Law Department colleagues with specialized expertise (e.g., IP, Privacy, Government Relations, Enterprise Transactions, Litigation, Corporate, Compliance) in order to provide robust solutions to legal questions.

The SB/PI position will report to the Head of SB/PI Law and perform a wide-range of legal work for the Personal Insurance business segment, focusing on state regulatory work, regulatory inquiries and complaints; policy reformations, rescissions and reinstatements; legislative and regulatory developments (state and federal); and legal research.
The candidate will have direct alignment to business owners and be expected to build relationships with partners across the organization, identify key legal issues presented and provide thoughtful and efficient legal advice on the legal matters presented.

A JD from accredited law school and 2+ years of legal experience is preferred. Candidates with fewer than 2 years legal experience may be considered, including 2026 law school graduates with pending bar exam results.
Strong preference for candidates who can work a hybrid schedule from Hartford, CT, or another company office location, with in-office days Tuesday through Thursday. Candidates located outside of an office location should be prepared to travel based on business needs.
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$111,200 - $166,800
