The Shelter Medicine Technician supports shelter medicine operations by assisting faculty and students during mobile unit and shelter visits. Responsibilities include coordinating transportation, stocking and maintaining the mobile unit, assisting with administrative documentation and educational presentations, monitoring patients during surgical preparation and procedures, and ensuring cleanliness and sanitary standards are maintained for both patients and participants in mobile and shelter environments.

Associate Clinical Specialist 1

  • 40% Assist in the operating space during surgeries to include monitoring anesthesia and maintaining cleanliness of the mobile unit. Assist with performing surgical prep of operative site using aseptic technique. Supports the flow of the surgical procedure by anticipating the surgeon's needs while providing safe, reliable, and efficient technological assistance. Ensure students are handling animals appropriately, cleaning cages and performing other related tasks as assigned.
  • 25% Assist in operating non-sterile surgical equipment. Provides assistance to veterinary and technical students, and surgical team members. Routinely cleans, disinfects, and prepares operating space before and after surgical cases to prevent contamination.
  • 15% Assist with ensuring appropriate handling and maintenance of equipment and supplies. Assist in the maintenance of a sterile field during surgery, ensuring sterial drapes, instruments, and supplies are properly handled.
  • 5% Assist with maintaining an organized system for surgical instruments, ensuring all items are cleaned, sterilized, and in good working condition. Assist in communicating when items are low in stock or need to be ordered and maintaining inventory on the mobile unit.
  • 5% Responsible for preparing and delivering PowerPoint presentations to students and reviewing assigned course materials throughout the week. Attend department meetings.
  • 5% Assisting with natural disasters that may affect our shelters.
  • 5% Other duties as assigned.

Job Competencies: (Proficient)
Basic computer, problem-solving, and communication skills

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Initiative in completing assigned responsibilities effectively and efficiently.

Knowledge of basic animal care and handling including restraint.

Strong attention to detail, including the ability to recognize hospital hygiene needs and identify changes in animal behavior and mentation.

Adaptability and ability to adjust to changing priorities and assist where needed during busy hospital operations.

Ability to work cooperatively with hospital staff while maintaining a positive and professional attitude.

An awareness around safety. Follow workplace safety procedures and use appropriate protective equipment.

Demonstrates punctuality, dependability, and accountability.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree; OR Completion of a Surgical Technology program OR Associates degree in veterinary technology OR CVT or equivalent OR 3 years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.

Preferred Qualifications:

One (1) or more years of related experience.

Fear-free certified.

Safety and Security Sensitive Job - Safety and security-sensitive positions are defined as those positions where any form of substance abuse may affect University activities through unsafe work behavior/performance or error in judgment; or where substance abuse could jeopardize the safety and well-being of employees, other personnel, or the general public, or cause significant damage to University property. This includes positions requiring firearms, access to controlled substances, handling hazardous material, operating heavy equipment or machinery, etc. These positions are subject to drug screens per PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

Emergency Essential Personnel -This position may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.


Vehicle Operation -University employees whose principal responsibilities of employment include operating a vehicle, performing maintenance on a vehicle, or supervising any public employee who operates or maintains a vehicle and positions with an expectation to travel will require an MVR and are subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, climbing, crawling bending, squatting, and/or twisting.
