A Brief Overview
As part of Children's Nebraska Spiritual Care team, the Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and team members. The Chaplain will collaborate closely with hospital team members while providing essential care to patients and families in times of emotional stress and/or crisis.

Essential Functions

  • Provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, families and team members. Facilitates and/or perform religious rituals as requested. Act as a contact to community clergy according to family request and need. Completes documentation in Electronic Medical Record.
  • Acts as a member of the hospital interdisciplinary teams providing patient care in assigned areas. Participates as a member on various committees as assigned. Refers patients to other disciplines as needed.
  • Shares responsibility in providing 24 hour emergency coverage to the hospital. Answers stat pages within 2 minutes and responds to emergencies while on-call within 30 minutes. Maintains a flexible schedule and demonstrates a willingness to adjust time to meet patient needs.
  • Maintains professional standing and growth to refine the quality of care provided. Participates in mandatory education and continuing education programs as mandated by policies and procedures/external agencies and as directed by supervisor. Participates in personal faith tradition and maintains professional standing according to that system. Attends team member meetings and contributes to the development of the mission of the Pastoral and Spiritual Care Department.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in religion, theology ministry or pastoral care from an accredited school Required and
  • Master's Degree in religion, theology ministry or pastoral care from an accredited school required
    • Anyone is this position 20 hours per week or less is not required to hold a Master's Degree

Experience Qualifications

  • Current standing in a religious tradition with denominational endorsement, along with experience in pediatrics, crisis intervention, and providing support to families in healthcare settings Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of human behavior
  • Knowledge of faith development and religious theory
  • Knowledge of the principles of pastoral care
  • Ability to work with families and staff with diverse spiritual understandings and needs.
  • Comfortable in and brings a calming presence to crisis situations.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Board Certified Chaplain Preferred
  • Associate Chaplains (0.5 FTE or more) must demonstrate a commitment to obtain Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) units and are expected to make measurable progress toward completing the requirements for a Chaplain role during their employment Required
