We’re looking for a strategic, technically sharp leader to take ownership of Alkermes’ cloud and Linux platform ecosystem. This role sits at the center of our enterprise and R&D technology landscape and is responsible for the performance, reliability, and compliance of our AWS workloads and Linux compute environments across both cloud and on‑prem systems.
You’ll bring deep platform engineering experience plus the ability to steer a modern managed‑services model. You’ll shape how our cloud and Linux platforms evolve — partnering closely with Enterprise Architecture, Cloud Architects, and IT Functional Leads — ensuring our environments remain scalable, secure, compliant, and ready for the scientific and business demands ahead.
In this role, you’ll set the technical direction, guide engineering approaches, and ensure our platforms run with strong operational discipline. Your work will directly support scientific computing, enterprise workloads, and the broader biotech mission: enabling teams to move faster, work securely, and trust their underlying systems.
Platform Ownership & Strategy
• Own the AWS and Linux platforms that support enterprise, R&D, and scientific workloads.
• Build and maintain multi-year platform roadmaps with Architecture and Cloud Leaders.
• Push modern engineering practices like automation, IaC, hardened baselines, solid monitoring, and auditability.
• Steer technology choices and platform evolution to support hybrid-cloud growth and future-scale.
Operational Leadership & MSP Governance
• Lead and govern MSPs delivering cloud and Linux services, ensuring that SLAs, quality, and compliance stay on track.
• Ensure operational processes meet expectations for reliability, performance, and audits.
• Maintain clear accountability between internal teams and external partners.
• Provide steady leadership during major incidents and drive fast, transparent resolution.
Cloud & Linux Engineering Excellence
• Oversee Linux configuration management, patching, image standards, and vulnerability remediation.
• Support R&D and scientific teams running Linux-based compute workloads including HPC, analytics, and data processing.
• Ensure AWS workloads follow strong security patterns: IAM governance, encryption, segmentation, logging, monitoring, and posture management.
• Drive continuous improvements in automation, predictability, observability, and resilience.
Compliance, Qualification & Governance
• Ensure cloud and compute services align with GxP expectations and GAMP5 qualification.
• Maintain documentation, evidence, change controls, and audit readiness for regulated platforms.
• Partner with Security, Quality, and Architecture, so platforms meet regulatory and internal policy requirements.
Cross Functional Partnership
• Work with Enterprise Architecture and Cloud Architects on standards, patterns, and future-state designs.
• Partner with IT Functional Leads to understand workload needs across R&D, Manufacturing, and Enterprise teams.
• Coordinate closely with the Windows/VMware lead to ensure clear boundaries and smooth integration across compute domains.
Required
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
• 10+ years in infrastructure, cloud engineering, or platform operations • Strong hands‑on experience designing and operating AWS‑based platforms (including identity, networking, compute, storage, and automation frameworks)
• Deep Linux engineering background (e.g., RHEL, Amazon Linux, Ubuntu)
• Proven ability to lead and govern managed service providers in hybrid cloud environments
• Solid understanding of GxP concepts and experience operating within regulated or audit‑ready environments
• Experience supporting scientific computing, analytics, or other data‑intensive R&D workloads
• Strong skills in infrastructure‑as‑code and automation tooling (such as Terraform, Ansible, or equivalent modern frameworks)
• Excellent communicator who can influence partners and technical teams across the organization
Preferred
• Pharma, biotech, or regulated manufacturing experience
• Experience with Kubernetes/EKS/ECS
• Familiarity with enterprise storage, backup, and data protection tools
• Relevant certifications (AWS SA/SysOps, RHCSA/RHCE, CISSP, ITIL, PMP) • People management experience is plus.
Travel & Location
• Travel up to 25%
• Primary locations: Waltham, MA
• Secondary Locations: Ireland; Wilmington, OH
• Hybrid role—on-site presence expected three days per week
