Job Description

A Legacy Worth Joining

In 1935, Dr. Frederick Douglass Patterson saw a gap in American veterinary education and built something to close it, establishing the first veterinary medicine program at a Historically Black College or University. Nine decades later, that decision still shapes the profession: Tuskegee has trained more of the nation's practicing veterinarians of color than any other institution. We are looking for someone who wants to teach, heal, and mentor inside that legacy of access and excellence — not beside it.

This is more than a faculty opening. It's an invitation to help carry forward a founding promise: that excellent medicine and open access to the profession should never be separated.

The Opportunity

The successful candidate will contribute to the College's tripartite mission of teaching, research, and service, with a primary focus on teaching veterinary students, graduate students, and graduate veterinarians in all aspects of small animal internal medicine. Clinical service responsibilities will be primarily within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), providing high-quality, compassionate care for patients while engaging students in hands-on learning.

What You'll Do

  • Delivering classroom, clinical, and laboratory instruction to veterinary students, graduate students, and interns.
  • Provide expert consultation and clinical service in Small Animal Internal Medicine within the VTH, with limited participation in Emergency/After-hour service and expected support of the Community Practice Section.
  • Mentor students, interns, and graduate veterinarians, supporting their academic and professional development.
  • Engage in teaching across all four years of the veterinary curriculum, from foundational sciences to advanced clinical practice.
  • Develop innovative teaching, service, and outreach programs that enhance the Department and College.
  • Participate in collaborative research and creative scholarship at the College, the University, and with external partners.
  • Contribute to community service and outreach consistent with TUCVM's mission, serving the region through our VTH.
  • All other duties as assigned.

    What You'll Bring

  • DVM (or equivalent) degree required.
  • ACVIM or ECVIM (SAIM) board certification strongly preferred.
  • Residency-trained candidates, or those with significant clinical experience in small animal internal medicine, will also be considered.

Why Tuskegee

Founded in 1881 by Dr. Booker T. Washington, Tuskegee University was built on the belief that education should serve people, not exist for its own sake — that the hand and the heart deserve as much cultivation as the mind. Over 143 years, that belief has carried Tuskegee through the Civil Rights era, through the founding of the Tuskegee Airmen, through the establishment of the nation's first HBCU veterinary program, and into the leadership of ten presidents who each, in their own way, kept the promise moving forward.

Join a college where your clinical expertise and your teaching will directly extend a tradition of opportunity and excellence — and where every student you mentor carries that tradition to the next community they serve.

Tuskegee University is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
