Description

Coaches in the Port Angeles School District play a critical role in supporting the growth, safety, and well-being of student-athletes. Port Angeles High School is seeking an Assistant Wrestling Coach with a primary focus on supporting and developing our female student-athletes. Under the overall direction of the Head Wrestling Coach, this Assistant Coach will specifically oversee the girls' roster, leading specialized skill instruction, managing tournament mat-side supervision, and fostering a positive, safe, and competitive environment for the girls' wrestling program.

The regular winter wrestling season runs from November 16th through February 20th. During this season, coaches must be available for weekday practices and dual meets, with regular Saturday tournament responsibilities. In addition to the winter competitive season, the successful candidate should be available to support off-season conditioning and summer program development, as appropriate and within WIAA guidelines.

Qualifications

• Previous wrestling playing (scholastic/collegiate) or coaching experience preferred, with specific knowledge of girls' high school wrestling dynamics.
• Demonstrated knowledge of wrestling fundamentals, rules, weight management protocols, and sportsmanship.
• Ability to plan and execute effective technique instruction, conditioning programs, and match preparation tailored to female student-athletes.
• Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with the Head Wrestling Coach, school athletic department, student-athletes, and parents.
• Availability to commit to weekday practice/meet schedules and regular Saturday tournament trips throughout the season (November 16 � February 20).
• Willingness and ability to drive school district vans to transport student-athletes to away meets and weekend tournaments.
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record to meet district driver clearance requirements.
• Strong communication, organizational, and administrative skills, including tracking weight certification data.
• Must meet or be willing to obtain all WIAA coaching certification requirements.
• Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, or ability to obtain prior to the start of the season.
• Must be willing to complete all district-required safety, harassment/compliance, and skin condition monitoring training.
• Ability to maintain student confidentiality and adhere strictly to district and school policies.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.

Core Responsibilities

In accordance with the Port Angeles School District Coaches Handbook, the Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Coach and fulfilling the following 11 Core Duties:

1. Duty to Warn � Inform athletes and parents of inherent risks associated with wrestling, including weight management and skin conditions.
2. Duty to Provide Appropriate Activities � Ensure conditioning, live wrestling, and technique drills match the physical readiness and skill level of the athletes.
3. Duty to Provide Safe Facilities � Inspect wrestling mats, practice spaces, and venue conditions for hygiene and safety hazards prior to every practice and meet.
4. Duty to Provide Safe Equipment � Ensure team gear, headgear, and mats are properly disinfected, maintained, and stored.
5. Duty to Train and Instruct � Provide safe, current, and effective instruction on wrestling technique, weight maintenance, and rules to prevent injury and promote athlete development.
6. Duty to Supervise � Maintain strict supervision of student-athletes in the wrestling room, locker rooms, weigh-in areas, and during travel.
7. Duty to Provide Proper Discipline � Maintain athletic decorum, sportsmanship, and appropriate behavior in alignment with school and WIAA policies.
8. Duty to Provide Safe Transportation � Drive district vans to transport team members safely to and from away duals and weekend tournaments in compliance with district transportation policies.
9. Duty to Keep Athletes Safe and Healthy � Monitor hydration, safe weight management protocols, communicable skin diseases, and environmental conditions.
10. Duty to Provide Appropriate Emergency Care � Respond promptly to mat injuries with basic first aid and execute emergency action plans when necessary.
11. Duty to Document and Report � Timely log match results, skin check documentation, injury reports, and administrative records as required.
