Position Title: Assistant Varsity Cross Country Coach

Full-time/Part-time: Part-time

Classification: Exempt

Pay Range: $3,500-$5,500 (based on experience)

Reports to: Head Varsity Cross Country Coach and Athletic Director

Supervises: None

Presentation High School in San Jose, California is seeking an Assistant Varsity Cross Country Coach for the fall season beginning August 6th, 2026, and ending around November 14th, 2026. This position will be responsible for assisting the head coach leading the team in support of an engaging and positive student experience.

Duties and Specific Responsibilities

1. Assist in the scheduling of games, scrimmages, and practices for the program
2. Teach and enhance fundamental skills and techniques, as well as advanced techniques in the sport.
3. Attend all team practices and games (Mon-Fri afternoons. Some Saturday commitments.)
4. Coordinate management of on-site events as directed by the varsity head coach
5. Attend Athletic meetings as required, including Coaches meetings and season parent meetings
6. Participate in all playoff events as directed by the varsity head coach
7. Report all game results to Athletic Department (if a head coach)
8. Responsible for maintaining appropriate behavior on the part of athletes at practices, games and in transit to and from events
9. Abide by all league and CIF-CCS rules and regulations and attend meetings as required
10. Prioritize an environment of safety for our student-athletes and provide first aid when required
11. Manage and maintain program equipment
12. Coordinate season-end awards program in partnership with the varsity head coach
13. Attend school functions related to the promotion of Athletic programs

Requirements

Education & Experience

Experience playing at a competitive level in the specific sport is preferred

Experience teaching skills and strategies that apply to the skill level of the players

Professional dedication to athletic development and expertise in coaching

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of appropriate safety measures to ensure the well-being of players
• CPR/First Aid certification
• CIF - Fundamentals of Coaching Certification required
• Other specific certifications as required by CIF/CCS related to the sport
• Proven ability to exemplify the highest standard of leadership, sportsmanship, and respect
• Good role model and demonstrated strong ethics

The Assistant Varsity Coach must be able to:

• Lift and/or carry all sports-specific equipment required to effectively run and organize training and competition
• Sit, stand, walk, climb stairs or ladder, reach, perform repetitive movements
• Work with frequent interruptions
• Also, considerable time is spent at a desk using a computer terminal.
• Afternoon, evening, and weekend hours are typical for all coaching roles.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described below represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:

Active work environment in a field, on the trails/sidewlaks, in a gym, or in a fitness room. Some time will be spent working on email, but most of the work will take place actively training students and the team.
