The School of Social Science and Global Studies at The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track, Assistant Teaching Professor of French beginning August 2027; this is a teaching-track position with opportunities for promotion. The School is seeking French generalist candidates who will demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, teach a full range of undergraduate and graduate courses in both the World Languages BA and the Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages programs, advise and mentor students, serve on committees, and work with graduate teaching assistants to implement standards-based practices.
Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesTeach four courses per semester, fall and spring, face-to-face and online as needed.Hold regular office hours.Mentor and advise students in the program.Attend faculty meetings as determined by the Director of the School of Social Science and Global Studies and program meetings as determined by the program coordinators.Engage in professional development and/or scholarly activities appropriate to the mission of the School, College, and University.Provide service to assist the functioning of the School, College, and University.Perform other duties as assigned.
Ph.D. or Ed.D. with specialization in French, second language acquisition, teacher education, or related field, with at least 18 hours of graduate French, completed by August 2027.
Native or near-native proficiency in French.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of second language acquisition, Spanish language pedagogy, and standards-based approaches to language teaching. Ability to articulate concepts, course content, and instructions clearly and effectively to students across undergraduate and graduate levels and in face-to-face and online environments.Capacity to build positive, respectful, and professional relationships with students, colleagues, graduate teaching assistants, and other university personnel.Preferred Qualifications
Experience teaching and mentoring in a university setting with a diverse student body.
Online teaching and online course design experience.
Graduate level teaching experience.
Interest in leading study abroad programs.
