Job Description

The School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC) ( https://shesc.asu.edu) at Arizona State University (ASU) is inviting applications for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor position. This is an annually renewable, fiscal year (12 months), career-track, non-tenure eligible appointment with full benefits through ASU, including health insurance and paid vacation and holidays. The position is located at ASU’s Tempe campus. The Assistant Teaching Professor should be in residence in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area during the appointment, to maintain an active on-campus presence, engaging meaningfully with faculty and students, participating in School activities, and contributing to SHESC’s vibrant intellectual life. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026, with some flexibility.

Under the leadership of SHESC’s Director, Professor Patrick Ryan Williams, the Assistant Teaching Professor will contribute to the instructional mission of SHESC through an 80% teaching load in the undergraduate degree programs (exact course load will be determined by the school director or their designee) and will maintain a service load of 20% that may include service on unit and/or college committees and supporting student organizations related to one or more of SHESC’s six areas of focus:

• Global Health
• Environmental Social Science
• Evolutionary Anthropology
• Archaeology
• Bioarchaeology
• Sociocultural Anthropology

Essential Functions:

• Contribute to SHESC’s undergraduate teaching mission in consultation with the SHESC Director. This includes teaching online courses that have already been developed as well as designing and developing new courses both independently and in collaboration with faculty.
• Advance SHESC’s leadership in instruction through transdisciplinary educational and career-related outcomes related to at least one or more of the areas of focus listed above.
• Contribute to SHESC’s mission of innovative teaching and instruction by disseminating best practices across the School's faculty and the broader academic community.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• A PhD in Anthropology, Global Health, Environmental Social Science, Human Biology, or a related social sciences or health sciences field.
• Demonstrated experience teaching/mentoring students in one or more of the following: online asynchronous learning, in classroom, laboratory, or field settings.
• Demonstrated willingness to collaborate in the design and development of new classes.
• Ability to work well independently and manage multiple tasks.

Desired Qualifications

• Previous experience in advancing, assessing, and improving online educational materials.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills as evidenced by varied dissemination approaches for academic and non-academic audiences (e.g., science communication, social or public media, presentations, briefs, reports, journal articles).
• Ability to cross-teach and mentor students in anthropology and other programs offered across the School, such as global health, human biology, or environmental social science.
• Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students and communities to advance the principles of ASU’s Charter

3. One-page statement of teaching philosophy relevant to teaching opportunities and challenges at ASU

Evidence of teaching effectiveness (should include at least one of the following: quantitative data from student teaching evaluations, select quotes from student qualitative assessments from teaching evaluations, or letters or reports from colleagues or supervisors who have observed your teaching), and
5. Up-to-date contact information (including email addresses) for three (3) professional references. References may be contacted at a later stage of the search and only with the candidate’s approval.
