What would you be doing?

  • Leading by example - using your training to perform rescues in and around the pool
  • Assisting in preparation of the swim team area for workout
  • Assisting with appropriate stretching and warm-up/cool-down activities
  • Assisting with maintaining safety and discipline during workouts and meets
  • Assisting in responding to the individual needs of participants
  • Assisting in providing a variety of demonstration, explanation, and practice and skill correction during each workout
  • Assisting in effective communication with athletes and parents in a friendly manner and providing appropriate encouragement
  • Being a positive role model for youth in your community
  • Upholding the YMCA Policies and Standards

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Head Swim Coach, the Assistant Coach will coach pre-competitive and competitive swimmers according to YMCA-USA and USA Swimming best practices and local protocols. They will be responsible for greeting parents and children, teaching strokes using a variety of drills and techniques, preparing practice sets, leading dryland and warmup activities, and attending scheduled meetings.

Essential Functions

  • Teach strokes, skills, drills, and techniques in accordance with the current YMCA-USA and USA Swimming best practices and local procedures.
  • Be prepared and on time for practices, clinics, and meets in order to greet parents and participants
  • Have all necessary equipment and a practice plan prepared before classes begin.
  • Remain on-deck after programs to greet parents and dismiss participants as well as clean up.
  • Record and track swimmer and participant personal records for each event and stroke.
  • Conduct and evaluate swimmers assigned according to standards set by the Head Swim Coach.
  • Understand the mission of the YMCA, incorporate the YMCA core values, and develop participants’ spirit, mind and body through competitive swimming.
  • Establish good rapport with parents, participants, and staff.
  • Communicate with participants and families through a variety of methods including in-person, email, and through approved app notifications.
  • Collect media to show swimmer progress, for parent communication, and for marketing using approved devices.
  • Be present for all practices, clinics, and meets during a season and/or document any necessary substitutions, getting supervisor approval prior to absences whenever possible.
  • Provide safe and clean environment for participants.
  • Dress according to the staff uniform policy determined by the Association and supervisor.
  • Attend all required meetings and trainings as designated by supervisor.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Additional Functions:

  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with both members and staff, and give directions in an authoritative yet tactful manner.
  • Ability to respond to critical incidents and act swiftly in an emergency situation.
  • Be familiar with and support the Mission of the YMCA.
  • Ability to adequately observe participant skills, enforce safety regulations, and utilize appropriate instructional and coaching techniques

Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 18 or older
  • Must pass YMCA background check
  • First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certifications from an accredited organization (American Red Cross, YMCA LG-v6, or similar) or ability to obtain immediately upon hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience with competitive swimming
  • Lifeguard (including deep water) Certification from the American Red Cross
  • YMCA-USA Coach Certification
  • USA Swimming Coach Certification
