Job Description

The Assistant Supervisor of Custodial Services position is responsible for supervisory work involving the assignment and direct supervision of custodial employees to maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of all buildings on Northwest campuses. This includes offices, classrooms, labs, fitness centers, and entrances/hallways. This position is also responsible for training new employees in proper procedures for operating tools, machines, cleaning compounds, and chemicals. In addition, the position acts as a resource to assigned locations regarding custodial services operations, building inspections, training, special projects, supply inventory, ordering of supplies, and emergency calls. This position reports to the Custodial Services Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED required, with at least (1) year supervisory experience working in custodial and/or building maintenance.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, creating documents, spreadsheets and presentations and the use of these skills in planning and organizing.
  • Must have a knowledge of effective cleaning techniques and routine preventive maintenance
  • Knowledge of cleaning materials, supplies, equipment, building fixtures and equipment.
  • Ability to learn and properly utilize various machines/equipment especially as machines/equipment are upgraded
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, both orally and in writing; ability to plan, train and provide work direction to other in a manner that is conducive to full performance and high morale of the employee
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with college faculty, staff and administration.
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies and work in inclement weather.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assist the Custodial Services Supervisor in screening Custodial Services employment applicants; provide recommendations for employment to the Director of Auxiliary and Facility Services.
  2. Prepare work schedules for assigned employees to include all buildings and events.
  3. Ensures that custodial services meet the needs of the college by scheduling work activities and adjusting workloads to compensate for scheduled and unscheduled absences, changing priorities, and special projects.
  4. Ensures the administrative records and reports regarding custodial personnel are accurate (i.e. reviewing/approving employee time entries, monitoring/approving employee absences and performance evaluations).
  5. Enforces college rules and policies regarding employee conduct by advising custodial personnel of the colleges rules and policies on employee conduct, issuing verbal counseling sessions, warnings and written reprimands for violations as well as recommending progressive disciplinary action to the Custodial Services Supervisor.
  6. Facilitate a custodial training program for all new custodial employees; provide ongoing training as needed.
  7. Act as liaison between custodial staff and other college employees, as needed.
  8. Consult with the Supervisor regarding personnel actions, as needed.
  9. Assist the Supervisor with the development of departmental goals and budget requests.
  10. Review and test new cleaning products from vendors; recommend new products to the Director for consideration.
  11. Perform building inspections to ensure the quality of work, cleanliness of buildings, and to certify that safety procedures are followed; document, report, or correct any infractions.
  12. Ensure, through documentation, that all custodial cleaning standards and procedures are performed at assigned sites.
  13. Schedule and perform monthly inventory of supplies and equipment within the main storage area and buildings; ensure that repairs are made in a timely manner.
  14. Replenish and distribute supplies and equipment in a timely manner to ensure the continued performance of custodial services and assigned locations.
  15. Perform special projects as directed, including organizing the work crew/schedules for new buildings, gym floor refinishing, carpet cleaning, summer residence hall cleaning, after-hours/emergency support team, etc.; follow standard operating procedures to identify job resources as needed.
  16. Complete cross training in all aspects of the operation of custodial services. (e.g., supply inventory and ordering, developing work assignments, facilitating training program, etc.)
  17. Facilitate employee input meetings with lead custodians quarterly.
  18. Performs daily custodial duties as needed in support of the departmental mission.
  19. Contributes to the overall success of the department by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Custodial Services Supervisor and/or Director of Auxiliary and Facility Services.

PHYSICAL REQIREMENTS

Requires the ability to inspect the cleanliness of facilities and areas that may only be accessible by climbing a ladder and/or stairs. Must be able to move throughout assigned areas, as work is sometimes performed both inside and outside buildings. Some standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, pushing and pulling is required. Lifting 10‐40 pounds frequently, 40‐75 pounds occasionally, and more than 75 pounds infrequently should be expected.
