Job Description

Location: Holy Cross Cemetery - Pomona Status: Non - Exempt, Full Time

Under direct supervision of the Supervisor, overseas and supervises workers are engaged in providing burial services and maintaining cemetery grounds and equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Because all Archdiocesan employees represent the Roman Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work.

  • Under direction of the Supervisor, supervises cemetery grounds operation and grounds personnel.
  • Lays out graves/crypts for opening; inspects for accuracy of location, proper depth, and container; verifies attractiveness and safety of grave setups.
  • Oversees equipment maintenance and ensures proper operation of sprinkler system.
  • Reviews and resolves problems and complaints pertaining to grounds personnel.
  • Enforces safety rules and regulations, daily review of security of buildings, equipment, and supplies.
  • Make certain all grounds personnel follow proscribed procedures and policies.
  • Maintains accurate records and reports of inventories of all supplies.
  • Assigns work in order of priority; assists families, priests and funeral directors as required.
  • Receives permits and deliveries from outside vendors, checking validity.
  • Schedules mowing, sweeping, fertilizing operations, as well as trimming, seasonal pruning, landscape and repairs in advance.
  • Assists Supervisor in preparation of timecards and distribution of time spent on each job.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications MINUMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Any combination of experience and education likely to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, typically:

  • Three years in all phases of cemeteries grounds operations, including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Coursework to include basic horticultural maintenance, mechanics, and personnel relations. Seminars, workshops, and courses in lawn maintenance, equipment and supervision and personnel management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of:

  • Basic English language usage.
  • Laws relative to interments/enforcements and disinterment’s/disentombments.
  • Personnel management.
  • Equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Lawn and ground maintenance.

Skill in:

  • Interpersonal relations.
  • Training, coaching, and directing the work of others.
  • Maintaining positive public relations with patrons, funeral directors, priests, and vendors.
  • Providing administrative support to the Cemetery Manager.
  • Safe and efficient use of required machinery and equipment.
  • Settling problems or complaints.
  • Performing tasks efficiently and economically.

Ability to:

  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Plan and assign workload.
  • Train, assign and delegate authority, as needed.
  • Handle unexpected problems.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Lift heavy objects and equipment
  • Lift objects weighing a minimum of 50 pounds unassisted and be able to lift heavier objects with the aid of other ground workers.
  • Handle grave set-ups, tins, and sod carefully.
  • Perform tasks requiring intermittent bending, stooping, and walking.
  • Sustain frequent movement of the fingers, wrists, hands, and arms.
