The Assistant Superintendent, Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) Maintenance oversees all maintenance activities for rail rolling stock, ensuring the safe and effective operation of Transit Rail Vehicles. This role is responsible for managing department planning, resources, and administrative functions, including vehicle inspections, payroll, materials, and safety compliance. The position also ensures proper training of maintenance staff.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversees timely and satisfactory inspection and maintenance of LRV fleets.
  • Ensures all LRV repairs are properly documented, analyzed, and corrective actions implemented to minimize repeat defects.
  • Administers training and retraining for mechanics; maintains current certifications, calibrations, and qualifications for staff and equipment.
  • Manages maintenance and upkeep of non-rolling stock support equipment, tools, and shop equipment, including cranes, lifts, wheel lathes, re-rail equipment, power tools, calibrated tools, and safety-related equipment.
  • Ensures safe working conditions for all maintenance personnel in compliance with company policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Plans maintenance activities and provides advance notice for procurement of parts; develops and manages departmental budgets and resources.
  • Oversees and administers contractor personnel; develops improvements to specifications for contracted goods and services.
  • Develops and manages project-related tasks, including scope development, purchase requisitions, purchase order management, and contract support.
  • Mentors and develops department staff, maintaining a safe, professional, and accountable work environment; assists in succession planning.
  • Supports materials planning with preventive maintenance, overhaul task planning, and project or campaign planning.
  • Assists LRV Engineering with prototyping and other engineering support tasks.
  • Coordinates directly with other Assistant Superintendents and Supervisors; assumes roles and duties of other supervisors as required.
  • Provides verbal and written recommendations to management.
  • Serves as LRV Maintenance subject matter expert (SME) for all LRV fleets in the absence of the LRV Maintenance Superintendent.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Certified LRV Electromechanic or LRV Supervisor with comprehensive knowledge of all tasks and responsibilities associated with LRV maintenance.
  • Strong understanding of LRV circuits and troubleshooting techniques; able to quickly and accurately provide guidance to maintenance personnel in the field.
  • Knowledge of procedures and practices across Agency departments, including Payroll, Contracts and Procurement, and Labor Relations.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical and operational information to all levels of the Agency.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Computerized Fleet Analysis (CFA).
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of both personnel and Agency-owned equipment.
  • Capable of developing work plans and procedures that address the needs of internal customers.
  • Skilled at gathering information from multiple sources, assessing potential impacts on the LRV fleet, MetroLink system, and LRV Maintenance Department, and implementing procedures to minimize negative consequences.

Work Environment

  • Primarily rail maintenance shop and rail yard settings, with exposure to heavy machinery, tools, and LRV equipment.
  • Indoor and outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including physically active tasks such as climbing, bending, and lifting.
  • Office environment for administrative, planning, and coordination activities with other departments.
  • Requires adherence to strict safety, operational, and regulatory standards, with possible shift or on-call work.

Physical Abilities

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, and reach for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move moderate to heavy objects (tools, equipment, or vehicle components).
  • Manual dexterity for handling tools, precision instruments, and small parts.
  • Visual and auditory acuity to inspect equipment, read gauges, and detect operational or safety issues.
  • Ability to work safely around moving vehicles, electrical systems, and heavy machinery.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency or troubleshooting situations
