Assistant Stage Manager

Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation is seeking an experienced individual to serve as Assistant Stage Manager, reporting to the Production Stage Manager of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

This position supports the Production Stage Manager, Company Management, Production Crew, and the Dancers of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT).
The role is seasonal, with 43 guaranteed work weeks for the 2026–2027 season. The selected candidate must be a member of the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA). Responsibilities include supporting rehearsals and performances in the city of origination, domestic and international tours, and special events.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience in a similar role and a strong background in dance stage management. This individual should demonstrate excellent communication, time management, and interpersonal skills, along with a proactive, self-motivated work ethic. A strong commitment to maintaining a safe, professional, and positive environment is essential.

Responsibilities:
• Support the production and stage management team through documentation, organization, video archiving, and calling repertory ballets
• Learn and maintain knowledge of current and past repertory
• Assist the Production Stage Manager in creating and maintaining accurate ballet information, including, but not limited to, calling of new and existing works
• Assist the artistic staff with hiring teachers and accompanists for company class
• Maintain and submit teacher and accompanist timesheets for weekly payroll
• Assist with monitoring rehearsal schedules, attendance, and dancer sign-in sheets; support technical needs, including lighting, scenery, sound, and properties as directed
• Assist in the creation and distribution of production materials, including run times, injury reports, daily schedules, casting, theater checklists, and venue reports
• Supervise stage activity and personnel during rehearsals, performances, and technical calls, including starting and stopping rehearsals
• Post signage in theaters on tour and provide directions from hotel to the venue
• Maintain first aid kit supplies for onstage and rehearsal use
• Support Company Management with tour logistics, including air and bus travel, airport transfers, and city-to-city coordination
• Prepare studios for rehearsals, including spike marks, rehearsal props, and musician setup
• Monitor and maintain office supplies for the production departments
• Maintain, and edit the (AAADT) video archives.
• Travel extensively, including several months of touring throughout North America and several weeks internationally
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Production Stage Manager

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum of three years of experience in stage management or a related production field, including live theater, touring dance, concerts, and/or production environments
• Knowledge of dance vocabulary.
• Experience working with stagehands in union and non-union environments.
• Proficiency in Mac OS X, Windows OS, MS Office, Zoom and Teams
• Exceptional organizational and time management skills with meticulous attention to detail.
• Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills
• Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships within multicultural and diverse environments
• Ability to take initiative, multi-task, collaborate, and work graciously in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to adapt to a wide range of venues and union environments, maintaining the highest production standards.
• Ability to exercise diplomacy, sound judgment, and composure under pressure
• Ability to positively represent the organization in all public settings
• Valid passport required

Work Authorization/Security Clearance:
Must pass criminal and child abuse background checks.

Compensation:
Salary determined in accordance with the AGMA Collective Bargaining Agreement ($2,002.64 per week). Benefits include AGMA health/dental insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, savings on transit/parking.
