Job Description
The Assistant Softball Coach supports the Head Softball Coach in developing a competitive, faith-centered softball program that emphasizes athletic excellence, character development, sportsmanship, and academic success. The ideal candidate serves as a positive role model, fostering an environment where student-athletes grow spiritually, academically, and athletically.
Essential Responsibilities
- Assist the Head Coach in planning and conducting daily practices, workouts, and game preparation.
- Teach and develop fundamental softball skills, game strategy, and position-specific techniques.
- Provide individualized instruction to help student-athletes reach their full potential.
- Promote teamwork, discipline, accountability, and good sportsmanship.
- Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, team travel, and other team functions.
- Support game-day operations, including field setup, equipment management, warm-ups, and post-game responsibilities.
- Help maintain and inventory team equipment and uniforms.
- Encourage academic achievement and monitor student-athlete eligibility expectations.
- Communicate professionally with players, parents, school administration, officials, and opposing coaches.
- Assist with off-season development opportunities, camps, clinics, and program fundraising as requested.
- Support the mission and values of St. Petersburg Catholic High School by integrating Catholic principles into the athletic experience.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Athletic Director.
Qualifications
- Previous softball playing and/or coaching experience preferred.
- Knowledge of softball fundamentals, rules, and player development.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to motivate and mentor high school student-athletes.
- Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and commitment to the school's mission.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel as required during the season.
Required Certifications
- Current CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Completion of all FHSAA coaching requirements.
- Successful completion of Diocese of St. Petersburg Safe Environment requirements, including:
- Level II Background Screening/Fingerprinting
- VIRTUS/CMG Safe Environment Training
- NFHS coaching certifications as required by the FHSAA.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to demonstrate softball drills and techniques.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
