Anticipated Vacancy - Posting is for an Engineer I position that will serve as Assistant Resident Engineer in the Sanford Resident Engineer’s Office. The position will assist the Resident Engineer in providing day-to-day management and contract administration of roadway and structure projects constructed by private contractors. The position is also responsible for the supervision of lower-level technicians. Duties will include, but not be limited to, performing project field inspections, preparing monthly/final pay estimates, creating, reviewing, and evaluating supplemental agreements and claims, ensure compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements, resolve constructability issues, and serve as DOT project representative for formal and informal meetings with contractors, utilities, local officials, media, and the general public. Employee will be expected to communicate in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing. Employee will need the ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment. Employee should have experience using computers and electronic tablets with SharePoint and HICAMS experience preferred. Employee will be expected to apply Department safety standards and program to operations. Employee may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic and will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions. Employee will be expected to perform moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing. Employee may need to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes required.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC16 $57,983 - $101,470
Management prefers applicants with the following:
Experience in reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contracts
Experience in directing, assisting, or training of subordinate employees
Experience administering contracts
Knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering
Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and/or construction surveying
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors
