Schnabel Engineering is seeking a highly skilled Assistant Resident Engineer to join our distinguished team for a project located in Alexandria, VA. With a reputation for excellence built over a decade, Schnabel Engineering shapes the foundation of our urban infrastructure. The ideal candidate will act as a field-based representative supporting the Resident Engineer to maintain quality control, safety standards, and schedule adherence.

Plant Upgrade Description:

Solids Upgrade Program: The SUP includes replacements to the thickening and dewatering equipment, gravity thickeners, and digestor heat exchangers and mixers. The Program will decommission a pasteurization system and install a new solids dryer facility. Future technologies, such as pyrolysis, may be piloted with operational support provided throughout the pilot's duration.

Preliminary and Primary Systems Upgrade Project: The PPSU Project plans to improve and rehabilitate the preliminary and primary processes located in two buildings and the Primary Settling Tanks (PSTs). The improvements in Building A include coarse screen upgrades, a third coarse screen, raw sewage pump upgrades, and raw sewage conduit rehabilitation. Building B improvements include fine screen upgrades, new screenings and grit conveyance, new truck loading technology, new grit washers, scum concentrator upgrades, and a mix of new vortex grit separators and stacked tray grit separators. Lastly, the improvements around the PSTs include primary sludge pump upgrades, refurbishment of the Primary Observation House, relocation of the existing walkway, repair of the PST effluent channel and control structures, and replacement of the PST influent baffles, slide gates, scum skimmers, and handrails.

Centrate Pretreatment Project: The CPT Project will upgrade the CPT system to a modernized continuous flow DEMON system. The work will include new flow-through baffles, parabolic screens, submersible pumps, wedge wire screens, instrumentation, and associated piping and cleaning.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Site Supervision & Oversight: Provide daily on-site construction supervision and mentoring of our inspection team’s oversight of wastewater treatment plant’s primary, solids and tertiary systems rehabilitation and upgrades, including mechanical, piping, electrical, structural, and pumping systems.
  • Contract Administration: Review, track, and process submittals, Shop Drawings, Request for Information (RFIs), and Contractor Payment Applications.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Review inspector’s daily reports, inspection logs, and photographic records of construction progress for quality and accuracy.
  • Compliance & Inspection: Monitor contractor activities for compliance with contract plans, specifications, building codes, and environmental regulations.
  • Change Management: Assist in evaluating and negotiating change orders, field modifications, and potential claims.
  • Startup & Commissioning: Participate in the testing, startup, and commissioning of process equipment and systems to ensure functional performance.
  • Safety Coordination: Enforce site safety regulations and participate in safety meetings to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Stakeholder Liaison: Coordinate with plant operations staff to minimize service disruptions during construction.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of construction management or construction field engineer experience specifically related to wastewater, water, or industrial process projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, process mechanical piping, and construction specifications.
  • Experience with construction management software (e-Builder, Procore, Primavera P6) and MS Office Suite.
  • Strong interpersonal and technical writing skills to produce reports and lead meetings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification.
  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM) certification.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record, and credit check

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening
  • Must be able to traverse uneven terrain on active construction sites, climb ladders (up to 24 feet), and access confined spaces.

  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.

  • Ability to work of hours on occasion.

The compensation range for this position is between $102,000 to $130,000. Compensation for this position may vary based on geographic location and other factors. We remain committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation to all employees, regardless of their location.
