Title Assistant Research Professor of Pediatrics Specific Title Appointment Type Scientist Track Faculty Department IUSM - Pediatrics Campus IU School of Medicine Indianapolis Position Summary

The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. The Wells Center houses more than 200 faculty investigators, staff, and trainees seeking answers to the most pressing questions related to childhood illness. With the collaboration between scientists and physicians, the center aims to increase knowledge of causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases. Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of sick children in Indiana and beyond.

An Assistant Research Professor in this position is expected to provide leadership within the laboratory on scientific methods and practices for immunology and genetic measurements to determine risk or presence of Type 1 diabetes in human clinical research. This includes developing new techniques to measure relevant biomarkers, including methods using radioisotopes and quality control programs. This role will also provide leadership in obtaining and maintaining regulatory approval for performance, reporting and use of disease-related biomarkers. This role will provide support for writing reports, grants and academic manuscripts related to the work of the laboratory.

We seek to study Type 1 diabetes and related autoimmune diseases, using measurements of antibodies, genes, metabolic signals, and related biomarkers. These are typically used in large clinical research studies to demonstrate efficient methods for identifying subjects at risk and/or for identifying triggering environmental exposures. The lab works on studies led by Dr. Hagopian, led by other IU investigators, or led by collaborating academic investigators at other institutions. The lab also maintains a biosample bank from Dr. Hagopian’s historical studies which can be used to investigate biomarkers of disease.

IUSM is committed to being a welcoming campus community and we seek candidates whose research, teaching, and community engagement efforts contribute to robust learning and working environments for all students, staff, and faculty. We invite individuals who will join us in our mission to improve health equity and well-being for all throughout the state of Indiana.
